The competition and the weather were hot for the 2006 American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Prairie Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D., July 9-14. More than 160 youth from 18 states gathered to compete in contests and cattle shows throughout the week.
The top ten in the All-Around Competition earned embroidered wheeled luggage sponsored by Wattis Ranch, LLC of Casper, Wyo. The All-Around Competition recognizes the AGJA members that earn the most points competing in contests during the week. Every participant that shows cattle automatically earns 10 points, while each participant in Quiz Bowl earns two points regardless of how the team places. In the other contests, participants earn points for placing in the top 10 in a contest (first place equals 10 points, while tenth place equals one point).
Dustin Aherin of Unadilla, Neb., earned the most points in the competition during the week to take top honors in the All-Around competition. Dustin is the son of Dennis and Joyce Aherin. He placed first in Intermediate Poster, Intermediate Impromptu Speaking and Intermediate Sales Talk. Dustin also placed second in Intermediate Advertising, fourth in Intermediate Photo, seventh in Intermediate Showmanship and tenth in Intermediate Livestock Judging. For his efforts, Dustin earned a belt buckle sponsored by Little Windy Hill Farm of Virginia.
Grace Hammer of Wallace, Kansas, slid into second place. Grace placed first in Junior Impromptu Speaking, second in Junior Advertising, third in Junior Photo, Junior Poster and Junior Showmanship. Grace placed sixth in Junior Sales Talk and was a member of the Junior Champion Quiz Bowl Team. She also exhibited the Reserve Champion Steer. For her efforts, she was the recipient of a heifer calf from the AGJA Heifer Chain. Dustin Aherin, a former Heifer Chain recipient, donated this year's heifer. Grace's parents are Lyle and Christy Hammer.
In third place for the all-around is Kaycie Shearer of Canton, Kansas. Kaycie earned first place in Senior Judging, Senior Sales Talk, and Senior Photo. Kaycie was third in Senior Poster and fourth in Senior Advertising. She is the daughter of John and Carla Shearer.
Emily Griffiths of Kendallville, Ind., earned fourth place in the all-around competition. Emily placed first in Senior Advertising and Impromptu Speaking, second in Senior Poster, fourth in Senior Sales Talk, sixth in Senior Judging, and seventh in Senior Photo. Additionally, Emily was a member of the Reserve Champion Senior Fitting Team and was elected to the AGJA Board of Directors during the Prairie Classic. Griffiths exhibited both the Champion and Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Gelbvieh Females in the show. Her parents are Carl and Rebecca Griffiths.
Justin Taubenheim of Amherst, Neb., took the fifth place award. Justin placed first in Intermediate Judging, second in Intermediate Showmanship, third in Intermediate Impromptu Speaking, sixth in Intermediate Sales Talk, and tenth in Intermediate Poster. He was a member of the Reserve Champion Junior/Intermediate Fitting Team, exhibited the Champion Market Steer and placed first in the Grid Merit Steer competition. Justin's parents are Mike and Renee Taubenheim.
Tanner Aherin, following in his brother Dustin's lead, earned sixth place all-around. Tanner was second in Junior Judging, Junior Showmanship and Junior Sales Talk. He placed ninth in Junior Advertising and tenth in Junior Poster. Tanner was a member of the Reserve Champion Junior Judging Team.
Just two places from his brother, Tanner Taubenheim took seventh place. Tanner was the Champion Junior Showmanship winner, Champion Advertising Contest winner, fifth place Junior Sales Talk, and seventh Junior Judging. Tanner was member of the Reserve Champion Junior/Intermediate Fitting Team and the Reserve Champion Junior Judging Team.
In eighth place is Johnny Shearer of Canton, Kan. Johnny won first place in Intermediate Photo, placed second in Intermediate Judging, fourth in Intermediate Impromptu Speaking, ninth in Intermediate Photo and tenth in Intermediate Showmanship. He was a member of the Champion Intermediate Judging Team. His parents are John and Carla Shearer.
Katlynn Sullivan of Robertsdale, Ala., earned ninth place in the all-around. Katlynn placed first in Intermediate Advertising, third in Intermediate Poster, third in Intermediate Sales Talk, ninth in Intermediate Impromptu Speaking and tenth in Intermediate photo. Katlynn was a member of the Champion Intermediate Quiz Bowl Team and the Reserve Champion Intermediate Judging Team. She is the daughter of Larry and Marie Sullivan.
Rounding out the top ten all-around is Justin Vehige of Bonnots Mill, Mo. Justin placed third in both Junior Advertising and Junior Sales Talk, seventh in both Junior Impromptu Speaking and Junior Showmanship, and eighth in Junior Judging. He was a member of the Reserve Champion Junior Quiz Bowl Team. Justin's parents are Tom and Stacie Vehige.
