BUCHHOLZ AND BARBER EXHIBIT AMERICAN ROYAL HEREFORD CHAMPIONS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It was a clean sweep for Texas exhibitors as cattle from the “Lone Star State” dominated the champion drives at the 2006 American Royal National Hereford Show, Oct. 22, in Kansas City, Mo. Tyler Cates, Modoc, Ind., evaluated the Hereford entries and paid exhibitors a big compliment at the conclusion of the show when he talked about the attributes of the Hereford breed and how impressed he was with the quality in the show.

Gary and Kathy Buchholz, Bardwell, Texas, topped the bull show by exhibiting two of the six division champions, including the overall grand and reserve grand champion. GKB Uptown B613 ET started his show career off on a high note being slapped grand and junior calf champion bull. He is sired by past national champion bull BR Moler ET and has expected progeny differences (EPDs) of birth weight (BW) 4.5; weaning weight (WW) 47; yearling weight (YW) 79; milk (MM) 14; and milk and growth (M&G) 38.

Intermediate champion GKB MCC 146 Keystone B538 took reserve grand champion bull honors. The DM BR L1 Domino 146 son is co-owned with Mason McClintock, Ft. McKavett, Texas. He posted EPDs of BW 3.5; WW 48; YW 77; MM 22; and M&G 47.

The grand champion Hereford female title was awarded to BR Gabrielle 5082. This powerful intermediate heifer has an undefeated national show record for National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) member, Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas. Prior to winning the 2006 American Royal, Gabrielle won the 2006 National Western Stock Show as a calf and also the Junior National Hereford Expo this summer. BR Gabrielle 5082 is sired by BR Lansing 3060 and showed with EPDs of BW 3.2; WW 48; YW 83; MM 23; and M&G 47.

In the reserve spotlight was BR Carol Channing 5020 ET exhibited by Kirbie Day, Waxahachie, Texas. The champion yearling heifer was bred by Barber Ranch, Channing, Texas, and is out of the popular sire BR DM Channing ET. Earlier in the day she was selected grand champion in the 59-head junior show. The Channing daughter posted EPDs of BW 5.0; WW 56; YW 93; MM 17; and M&G 45.

Reserve to Carol Channing in the junior show was another Texas heifer shown by Shawn Gilmore, Floresville, Texas. DCC 8006 Lady 5267 ET was bred by DeShazer Cattle Co., Hearne, Texas, and sired by H 8E Embracer 8006. She went on to win the fall division in the open show later in the day. Don Boggs, Manhattan, Kansas, evaluated the junior entries.

At the conclusion of the open show Four L Hereford Farm, Atwood, Tenn., stepped into the American Royal winner's circle and claimed purple banners for premier breeder and exhibitor, as well as best six head and champion get of sire.
