Denver, Colo. -- Celebrating their 36th year the American Salers Association had a weekend full of events at the 2011 National Western Stock Show January 15-17. Following the Breeder's Choice Sire Futurity Show in the Beef Palace Arena on Saturday 15, the annual banquet was held in a full NWSS Centennial Room. Noteworthy this year was the high number of cattle entered in the Salers events. Over 150 head were entered, making it the highest number for many years and exceeding entries by several other major breeds.

Jo C. G Colmore of Colmore Farms, Rising Fawn, Ga., is co-owner with Harris Farms, Mt. Juliet, Tenn., of the Grand Champion Salers Bull DJF Whiskey River 9006W. Colmore is also the owner of JCGC Xtra Hot 081X which won Grand Champion Optimizer.

The Futurity consists of Salers breeders who annually buy a Futurity membership. The show features the breed's best young sires. This year breeders voted AVS Out West 210X as the 2011 Futurity champion. He is a February 2010, black, homozygous polled, purebred son of MAC Topeka 159T, owned by Ken Bates, Ahtanum Valley Salers, Yakima, Wash. Futurity member Danny Todd of Crawford, Colo., held the winning card in the drawing to win sale proceeds from the sale of the Futurity Champion Bull. Out West sold in the National Sale for $6,800 to Triple C Farms, Jamestown, Tenn.

The Salers & Optimizer Pen Bull Show began on Sunday the 16th. The three judge panel consisted of Jim Ligon, Cookeville, Tenn., Dr. Cody Wright, Brookings, S.D., and Jerry Crownover, Everton, Mo. They evaluated some top quality purebred and Optimizer cattle in the Livestock Center Auction Arena. The grand champion pen of Salers bulls went to GG&T Cattle Co., of Quinter, Kansas, with an entry consisting of three January 2010 calves; GGT P Bk Protocol 45X, a GGT P Bk Heavy Hitter son; GGT P Bk Progress 160X, an AP Polled Genesis XZ64F son; and GGT P Bk New Dawn, a GGT P Blk Arrival 170T son. The pen had an average weight of 1,308 pounds, and an average WDA of 3.53 pounds. Average EPDs were +1.9 for BW, +69 for WW, +114 for YW and a milk EPD average of +23.

Elm Creek Ranch, Hebron, N.D., had the reserve champion pen of Salers bulls with an entry consisting of a January, a February and a March 2009 calves; OPP Eliminator 038X and OPP Nighthawk 07X, both sons of GGT P Blk Enforcer 300U; and OPP Wheelhorse 945W, a PCSL Spark son. The pen had an average weight of 1,093 pounds, and an average WDA of 3.20 pounds. Average EPDs were +0.8 for BW, +53 for WW, +95 for YW and a milk EPD average of +24.

GG&T Land and Cattle Company also took home the prize for grand champion pen of Optimizer bulls. The pen consisted of three bulls born in January 2010, GGT Hero 132X, a son of GRNO New Design 260P, GGT End Run 240X, a son of Triple J Design of Foxcross, and GGT Focus 201X, sired by Mytty in Focus. Average EPDs were +1.6 for BW, +60 for WW, +106 for YW and a milk EPD average of +24. Average weight was 1,345 pounds and average WDA 3.72.

Reserve champion pen of Optimizer bulls went to Z7 Bar Ranch LLC, Pawhuska, Okla., and was made up of two March and April 2010 bulls; ZBR On Time 075X, sired by EXAR Moneymaker 83219, and ZBR Fame N Focus 109X and ZBR On Focus 080X, both SMR In Focus 7519 sons. Their combined average weight was 1,073 pounds, and average WDA of 3.68. Average EPDs were +3.8 for BW, +58 for WW, +104 for YW and a milk EPD average of +20.

The National Salers & Optimizer Show was held on Monday 17th. The show kicked off with the Junior Salers show where Ms Krisha Custis, Saratoga, Wyo., judged the high quality female line up. Jessica Dixon, Pawhuska, Okla., had the grand champion junior heifer in the Junior Show. The winning heifer was ZBR Ms Topaz Silk 055W, a March 2010 daughter of ZBR Midnight 30S. Kylee Kohls, Litchfield, Minn., took reserve champion junior heifer with HA Sara W906, a March 2009 heifer sired by JGK Blk Pld Titan.

As grand champion Optimizer in the junior division, Ms. Custis selected KKCC Baby Doll 033X for owner Kylee Kohls, an April 2010 born daughter of KKCC BP T-Rex 783T. ZBR Heroique Pearl 030X was named reserve junior champion Optimizer. Exhibited by Haleigh Pike, Mitchell, Neb., Heroique Pearl is a March 2010 daughter of JCGC Umpire 832U.

Jered Shipman, Grandview, Texas, judged the National Open Salers and National Optimizer shows following the Junior Show. The Open Show began with the Optimizer division for the heifers. Shipman selected JCGC Xtra Hot 081X, as grand champion Optimizer heifer for Jo Colmore, Rising Fawn, Ga. Xtra Hot is a March 1, 2010 born daughter of Gamble's Hot Rod. DJF Whistle 924W, owned by Silver Spur Salers, Maryville, Mo., was selected as the reserve champion Optimizer heifer.

In the Optimizer Bull Show Morgan Love of H & S Salers, Baltimore, Ohio, had the grand champion Optimizer bull with H&S X-Tra Hot, an April, 2010 son of H&S Recharge. Reserve grand champion Optimizer bull went to Z7 Bar Ranch LLC, Pawhuska, Okla., with ZBR Pay Date 039X, a March 2010 born son of Basin Payweight T397 AK.

In the Salers female show GGT P Bk Sequoia 48W, a January 3, 2009 born daughter of GGT P Bk Heavy Hitter, was named grand champion female for owners GG&T Land and Cattle Company, Quinter, Kansas, Triple C Farms, Jamestown, Tenn., and 3D Cattle Company, Marlow, Okla. Reserve grand champion heifer went to Breanna Duncan, Marlow, Okla., for 3D Ms Fiona, born March 2010, a daughter of 3D Pld Power On.

Regarding the outstanding Salers heifers on display Judge Shipman commented, “It's very nice to have this type of representation for your breed. Exhibitors have done a great job putting their cattle in a moderate package while maintaining the skills the Salers breed excels at.”

Moving onto the bulls, Shipman awarded grand champion Salers bull honors to earlier named Junior Champion DJF Whiskey River 9006W, owned by Jo Colmore, Rising Fawn, Ga., Harris Farms, Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Silver Spur Salers, Maryville, Mo.; a March 13, 2009 born son of JSR Jamaca 431. The reserve grand champion bull title was awarded to January 15, 2009 born GGT P Bk Backlash 170U, sired by AP Polled Genesis XZ64F, earlier named Senior Champion bull. Backlash is owned by Elm Creek Ranch, Hebron, N.D., GG&T Land and Cattle Company, and Rust Mountain View Ranch, Turtle Lake, N.D.

In concluding the bull competition, Shipman told exhibitors, “You should be commended as a breed of cattle for these bulls. It blows my mind to see how good they really are, good-footed, and showing longevity. Clearly they are adaptable to many environments. The quality of these Salers bulls is very, very impressive.”

Produce of Dam went to GG&T Land and Cattle Co., with the progeny of GGT Polaroid 5L.

The Premier Breeder award went to Breanna Duncan, Marlow, Okla., while Duncan also received recognition as Premier Exhibitor.

ASA Herdsman of the Year is Sarah Fuller, Buhl, Idaho.
