MEADOWS CREEK FARM HOSTS FIELD DAY

The Alabama Charolais Association and the Houston County Cattlemen's Association held a joint field day at Meadows Creek Farm in Columbia, Ala. The Geneva and Henry County Cattlemen's Associations were special guests at this May 26, 2012 event.

The activities began with a Junior Charolais Heifer Show. Rickey Hudson of Dothan, Ala., served as judge while Nick Williams of Bremen, Ala., worked as ringman. Nick Williams is the current president of the Alabama Junior Charolais Association. Jake Tucker of Uriah, Ala., showed the Grand Champion heifer while Amber Whittington of Pintlala, Ala., was awarded Reserve Champion heifer. Davis Henry of Pintlala, Ala., and Luke Meadows of Columbia, Ala., were co-winners in the Novice Showmanship. Will Meadows of Columbia, Ala., won Junior Showmanship, while Christopher Bell of Excel, Ala., won Senior Showmanship.

A 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest was also held. Cameron Morgan of Dozier, Ala., was high individual while Catherine Andress of Madrid, Ala., was second high individual. During lunch, the crowd of over 150 was entertained by Winston Shelley's gospel music band. After lunch, a waterslide, roping demonstrations, watermelon, home-made ice cream, snow cones and popcorn was available.

The Charolais Association Annual Meeting was conducted by President, Gary Staples of St. Clair County. At the conclusion of the meeting, Jim Akins of Lauderdale County was installed as the new president. Next, Reid Blossom from the Alabama Cattlemen's Association gave a report on the association and activities as well as upcoming junior events. The keynote educational speaker was Dr. Lisa Kriese-Anderson of Auburn University. Her presentation was on the strengths of using Charolais genetics in a planned crossbreeding program.
