Black Bear Pass off-road in Colorado

Several friends have already asked where I went on vacation this summer.  They know the only time I get to take a vacation is during the summer or right around Christmas and New Year’s.  Well, this summer I took a little drive to southwest Colorado to go off-road in the San Juan Mountains. I said a little drive, however, it was twenty-four hours one way.  It was a long drive out to southwest Colorado and back home; however I had a few friends accompanying me on the trip that helped with the driving.  Now you are asking yourself why did I not just fly out to Colorado and rent a car or truck?  Rental car companies really do not want you to go off-road in their cars or trucks and I have yet to see a rental car or truck that would make it on the trails and passes that I went on.

Telluride, Colo. thousands of feet below

Signs were posted at the beginning of every trail “Recommended High Clearance Four Wheel Drive Short Wheel Base vehicles only.”   I had to drive my Land Cruiser so I would have a vehicle capable of running the trails and passes that I had time to explore. I was asking a lot from my old Land Cruiser, almost a 4,000 mile trip driving from Northport, Ala. to southwest Colorado, travelling over some extreme off-road trails and bringing me back home.  I was more nervous about the trip out to Colorado and back than the off-road trails! Once we made it to the San Juan Mountains, we started out on easy trails like Owl Creek Pass, elevation of 10,114 and Yankee Boy Basin, elevation of 12,463.

Extremely high drop offs and downhill at a steep angle

As we worked up our confidence and started getting comfortable with the sheer drop off on the side of the mountains, we ran Imogene Pass, elevation of 13,114 and Black Bear Pass, elevation of 12,840.  Truth be told, none of us were comfortable with the drop offs on the side of the mountains.  However, the main reason we decided to go to southwest Colorado was to run Black Bear Pass.  After driving from Alabama to Colorado, I had to run Black Bear Pass!Black Bear Pass is one of the most famous trails in Colorado, due to the scenery and the slightly terrifying challenge of the trail. Black Bear Pass has a high difficulty rating because of the extremely high drop offs, shelf roads of loose rocks and sand, tight switchbacks and going downhill at a steep angle.

Tight switchbacks

If you can manage to loosen your grip on the steering wheel and force yourself to look off the cliff, you can see Telluride, Colo. thousands of feet below you.  Black Bear Pass is around 10 miles long and takes about 4 hours to run.  We had an awesome time running these trails. If we just had some trails like these in the Southeast. I am happy to report that my friends and I, and the Land Cruiser made it home without even a scratch.

Absolutely nothing about cattle sales! Canoeing on the lake!

Dixie, Hank, and Luke Mobley

Well, I finally received the new boat that I have been asking for each Christmas.  It is not quite the Ranger bass boat I was asking for, and it is definitely not the fastest boat on the lake. I have challenged a few individuals on jet-skies to a race although no one seemed to take me very seriously.  It is a little small in comparison to a Ranger bass boat as it’s only a one person boat.  However, to be fair I do need to point out the good qualities of my boat.  It gets great gas mileage, either as good as or better than any boat on any lake or river.  No insurance or tags required on my new boat. The cost of my new boat was much, much less than the cost of a Ranger bass boat.  My new boat is easy to load and unload.  I have no problem accessing those small fishing holes or rivers that the Ranger boat can not fit or go.  It just takes a little more time to get to the fishing spot.  There is absolutely no room for a cell phone or computer.  So if you are trying to contact me, leave a message. No Work! I have just enough room for my two best boating partners, who are pictured below.  And I get a great workout paddling around the lake which Dixie and Hank think is great letting me do all the work. On second thought, I am not sure if that is a good quality or not. What is that old saying? You are never too old to learn a new trick.  I think I need to teach Dixie and Hank how to paddle. If I did teach Dixie and Hank how to paddle, this story would be a lot more interesting for you to read.  I will keep you posted; I could fill this whole column with a story like that.  I do attract a lot of attention while paddling my new boat on the lake, only when Dixie and Hank are sitting in the front.  likes to thinks she’s the captain of the boat.  Trying to tell me where to paddle to by looking in the direction she wants to go. As I paddle on in my direction, she just sets a new course.  But the best quality of my new boat is it’s only a one person boat, so do not ask to go for a ride!
