Belts slipping on JD 335

Postby kentuckyguy » Sat Apr 14, 2018 11:32 am

Well I just bought a JD 335 and decided to break some bales and roll them out to test out the baler. The baler works great until the roll gets to about 2 1/2’ diameter. That’s when the belts start slipping.
I first though the hydraulics were bleeding off but the gate is not opening at all. It rolls a super sized tight bale right to the 2 1/2’ mark.

Any idea on what’s causing this?

Check all bearings. Make sure none of the rollers are froze up. This also come under bearings as there will be bearings in the ends of the idler rollers.

All of the bearings feel tight and the rolls are free spinning.

It just seems crazy to me that it makes a super tight 30” tall bale and then the belts just start slipping.

Belts maybe stretched. The OM should list the length the belts should be. Pull one out and measure.

That’s probably my next move but I thought that if it would start a bale and get it up over 2’ the belts should be fine.

Make sure the belts are in the baler in the right position. PO might have laced them through the baler wrong. Belts do not stretch.

Depending on the belt construction they surely can stretch. I've cut as much as 3 inches out of a belt to get them back to proper length.

Sone belts will actually shrink over time tho.

I had something similar on a Hesston baler and ended up being a missing key on a sprocket. Could be a number of things. If you have someone else to drive tractor so you can walk along watching (with side door of baler open) you can probably track what is actually slipping.

Don't know about that model, but on the 530 and 535 model it seems to me your drive chain can be missing or like Chris B said a key could be missing on the chain drive. The baler will still bale for awhile until the bale gets a little bigger because it will drive through the belt mechanism from the pickup on the balers RH side.

The drive roller for the baler never quit spinning, belt tension was just lost

Dealer came and picked the baler up a couple days ago and told me he is going to make it right.

Interesting. Balers must shrink over time then. Cause there's a lot of old balers out there with sloppy belts.
