A Tail of Two Females ?

Postby Stocker Steve » Tue Nov 08, 2016 10:18 pm

So the cattle cycle is on the down swing and yet many of us are holding lots and lots of females. If the current trend continues through 2017 and 2018 - - will bred heifers or bred cows lose more in value?

Yes. Unless, of course, they don't. Then, no.

Sorry. Snarky.

I don't think "trends" mean what they used to. I think the last major drought and the era of $8 corn combined with free trade agreements have jacked our understanding of "trends". I think we are in uncharted territory and there is no predictable cycle at this point. Didn't low cost feed used to make calf prices go up? There are no rules here.

I was looking at buying some replacements with recent prices:
young breds at $1100 to $1300
cull cows at $500 to $700
So lots of cow depreciation if they don't stick around... Seems like this pricing relationship has to change.

That's the million dollar question. I've gotten more orders for cattle today than I've gotten in the last month if that's any indication of the enthusiasm :)

All orders for replacement heifers too. Every pasture from i35 to Arkansas is full of black replacement heifers.

I would agree. The customers of our order buying company seem to have woken up as well.
