Over $2 Calves ?

Postby Stocker Steve » Fri Jul 21, 2017 8:36 am

I am seeing 240 to 300# beef calves selling for $500 to $600, which is causing old cow pairs to be split. Are you seeing this in your area?

I see it some but it is mostly calves going to rodeo events. When there is more than one rodeo buyer in the crowd, they tend to overpay. Small calves with horns really do well. It does seem to be a shame that it puts a lot of decent older cows on the packer truck.

Kill price has been dropping here. For the right set up, there appears to be more $/head in picking off a few "turn back" cows.

I think one of the current games is to ship in old Dakota cow pairs to sell to a hobby guy for a premium. If that fails - - then the calf goes south west and the cow is close to a packer.

They've always split them down here. Makes more money for the seller.
