Starting Over...

Postby MFPolledHerefords » Sat Jul 30, 2016 8:22 pm

My wife and I recently obtained the farm ground her family settled in 1877. Starting in the early 60's, her family bred and sold Registered Polled Herefords across the United States and Japan. We have recently purchased a herd and are "starting over." Joined this forum to gain insight to fixing the pastures and assisting with growing the herd. Have been reading for weeks, just now decided to get a username, but have already learned a lot. Located in Eastern Kansas.

Welcome! Good to have someone else from Kansas. Our ranch hadn't been surveyed since 1879. Congrats on obtaining a piece of family history.

Welcome. In returning back to raising registered PH's, was it possible to find bloodlines from wife"s family's herd?

Was able to find 6 cows born on this farm. One is 9 years old, the other five are 3-4 yrs as they left the farm in pregnant cows. Now we are attempting to track down a bull. Have over 50 registered at this farm, just need to find one...

My wife and I agree, you can buy any cow you want. Finding something that took years to create and you owe to your ancestors is priceless.

MFPH, I think is awesome that you found some of the original bloodlines. I would think that those cattle would be best adapted to your place. Just cool!

Welcome to the forum. So glad you could join. : )

Sounds like a lot of hard work, but it will totally be worth it. A lot of history behind that farm, I hope things go really well as you start back up.

Hope to see you around. Best of luck!
