Hi everyone! My name's Jim and my family has a homestead in PA where we have a garden and take care of cows, chickens, rabbits and (as of late) goats. Looking forward to learning from all ya all and perhaps even contributing my own two cents.

Welcome. I didn't know there was still land to settle up north.

I might be wrong, but I think "homesteader" refers to the "lifestyle" not actually being able to "homestead land". Up north, most people who do the "back to the land" type thing, refer to themselves as homesteaders. I have even used it a time or two to describe the type of lifestyle I try to somewhat follow. Self sufficient, do for yourself, raise your own food, produce much of what you use, that sort of thing. I am surely not knocking it as I am of the same mindset in many ways. Anyone who believes in the whole try to take care of themselves and their own needs as much as possible is a plus in this modern society of "do for poor me" mindset.
