Howdy,
New to this site and wish I had found ya about 3 years ago! :)
I'm consider myself pretty new to beef farming. My goal is natural, grass/hay fed beef. I have a piedmontese bull and 5 crossbred beef cows. The calves are pretty good. Now to make a profit at it...ha ha. I really want to learn how to make this business work. I enjoy the cattle and raising the beef.

I tried crossing the bull with 1/2 piedmontese cows this past year, and came up recently with disasters. 2 calves had to be pulled and died, and one downed cow. So, I'm all ears for learning about breeding for the qualities that the Piedmontese beef carries, but how to do that without the livestock losses that just about put me out of farming in a hurry.

Your first move should be to sell the Piedmontese and buy some British , easy calving high quality beef cattle, such as Red or Black Angus or Herefords or a cross between the Angus and Herefords, referred to as Black Whiteface or Black Baldies. Red Angus crossed with the Herefords arde known as Red Baldies or Red Whiteface or Brockel Face.

Welcome to the boards. You might consider switching to Murray Grey for easier calving and handling. ;-) :cboy:

I wouldn't try this again. You will probably get similar results if you do. l4, Susie, and Springer all offered you good advice. Lose the Piedmontese bull.

Lots of others to choose from.

I'll seriously consider the advice. Thank you. With that in mind...to delete the Piedmontese from the breeding program, I'm hoping to learn what other breeds offer the same beef tenderness and low fat/cholesterol with a great rate of gain?
Any suggestions?

You might consider Red Poll as they offer what you are looking for.
