My wife and kids took off for two weeks on vacation right at the start of melon harvesting. I'm not real sure just how much honeydew one man can eat without getting the squirts but I do intend to find out.

My daughter and I have a lot to learn but this year's tomato/pepper garden is looking promising. Looking forward to making salsa and pasta sauce in a month or so.Image
We have 6 types of peppers and 4 varieties of tomatoes. Maybe a mistake but we put a couple watermelons in the middle of the peppers Hoping the vines would run over the edges and not disturb the peppers. Image We planted the tomatoes in black plastic with a soaker hose underneath the plastic, they are looking good and no weeds which makes things much easier. The staking I tried is working OK but I should have used longer t posts.Image

I like the plastic idea. Me and the wife was just talking about trying it last night.

We used clear plastic on the peppers but the weeds grew right under it so we tore it up and just used straw. We used oilfield pit liner on the tomatoes which is black and real thick and it worked like a dream. I just tacked it to the wood with short roofing nails.

CottageFarm, you probably don't remember from last year when you suggested I plant Prudens Purple in place of Brandywine in this years garden. Excellent suggestion! USDA prime.

I had a tomato plant that turned brown, leaves curled up but parts were still producing
It's been a 100 plus everyday for weeks so I thought it wasn't getting enough water so I really watered well, but it died anyway.

Now the rest are beginning to do the same
Any idea what's wrong ?

Thanks for the compliments! I have a tomato question also. Why aren't ours ripening? Lots of big tomatoes they're just not turning red. Same thing happened last year. Should we prune them more?
