Red Onions

Post by alisonb » Tue Dec 05, 2017 12:03 pm

We started pulling the red onions yesterday, I'm trying to get them out before it rains. We usually get a Christmas present from above every year :D They will be hung to dry in a shed and then marketed.

It's a great onion, even growth, good colour, size and verrrrrrrry tasty - Red Neptune. Have made caramelized onions, pickled onions, salad, stir fry and onion rings...just not a bloomin' onion yet, don't think a red bloomin' onion will look too good? I'm open for suggestions folks :P

I think a red bloomin onion would be fine. It would have character.

Those look great.

Do you guys make onion relish?

Thanks Jo and Ga. We got 4 nice loads out today...still lots to go.

Jo, it would seem like the relish is similar to what we call caramelized onions?

I used this recipe for the pickled onion if any one is interested...very good :D -

Don't know. Onions aren't caramelized only pickled in a sweet pickle with tumeric.

Here is a good recipe if you've never tried this. Red onions should do fine.
