Try some peaches and cream. I rabbit would have to pack a sack lunch to cross my place, and I get a good yield out of it.

Its poor pollination, you planted just a little corn in rows, instead of lots of corn in blocks. That's my guess.

When the tassels and silks are visible, cut off a tassel and hand pollinate by brushing it against each ear's silks. Or plant a field of corn, and let the wind do it.

I found its easier to get my sweet corn from a neighbor who grows for a farm stand, then concentrate on what I can grow well at my scale.

I see that sort of corn every time we get an extended dry spell - wet years grow good corn. I only water weekly through the dries and it's obviously not enough.

Sometimes I wonder how anyone grows these things commercially when they're so hit and miss in the garden. All my brassicas are already trying to decide whether to bolt first or die under insect attack first, I won't get anything edible off them till the late autumn *if* any survive.

Hmmm, I was watering daily for 2 hours each. Using one of those tall impact sprinklers that cover 100ft circles.

Your corn didn't pollinate. Must of been to hot when it tried to pollinate.

Hook, those ears look more like a pollination problem. Looks like you're not getting good ear fill, which generally means you're not getting the pollen to the silks.

How far apart are your plants spaced and how large a "block' of them do you have? you want them close together, close than the package says, like 10-12" max. And plant in blocks of at least 8' square. Walking thru the rows when they're tasseling can help distribute pollen.

Your sandy soil will take a lot of fert, corn is a super heavy feeder and yes likes lots of water, but 2 hours a day certainly sounds sufficient. Heat can be a bit of a problem too if it's really hot when they're tasseling. I don't really know why it makes a difference, but I used to have problems with that in AZ whenever I planted late.

EDIT: Sorry, Sim, we were typing at the same time and you beat me to it!

Bunch of short rows are better than a few long ones.

I can't say it won't happen but I doubt it very seriously.

My main hope is that a local nursery will buy a bag and then partion out small quantities. Though that may not be legal Monsanto world.
