Angus Heifer bull ideas

Postby Jake » Thu Feb 11, 2016 10:46 am

Looking for some ideas for proven "sleep all night" heifer bulls. Heifers are SAV Mustang daughters/grandaughters, SAV Bismarck granddaughters and OCC Emblazon grand daughters.

Don't care for anything with GAR blood or Ten X as I would like to have the option to retain some heifers and those are genetics I don't want in the herd. Wanted to see what folks came up with for ideas.

McCurry Angus is in Burrton & their annual bull sale is Mar 10th. That's where we get all our bulls. Great customer service, family operated for 3 generations.

I used Infinity(17083470) some this year, fairly high acc, with some performance to him.used some Lightning(17176063)not as much acc.
If you can find semen Really Windy 4097(15776681)i used him spairingly. Now if all you care about is sleeping all night Net Present Value(14311951) just a few I've used.

Going to have 50 head to calve out and I live 3 hours from the farm so live calves is the most important piece. We will have them looked after by somebody but its hard to ever trust someone fully the way you would trust yourself.

We have had good luck with s Summit 956, we will calve our first daughters in few weeks. The bull is the best calving ease angus no one knows about. Birth weights are very consistent as is the phenotyp of his progeny. I know he is not a sexy carcass stud but I think is daughters will be here a long time. Just a very underrated bull in my opinion.

In past I have used Hoover Dam, and BPF Special Focus, with good calving results. This year, heifers will be calving to Stevenson Rockmount RX933.

B3R Back to Basics. He's at Origen, which you can get from ABS.

Have you seen many progeny? How much growth is a guy giving up?

Select has limited amounts left but Circle A Image Maker has done that here and on commercial heifer projects I breed for. Sleep all night calving ease and grow like heck. 1/5 is a tick smokey but nothing terrible.
I use Cedar Ridge when I'm really nervous about a customer or a heifer. They do grow pretty decent for how little they come.

I've used SAV Thunderbird for 3 years in a row now on my heifers and feel very confident with him. Born a nice compact size are very vigorous and then they take off and no sacrifice on weaning weight. Have predominantly had bull calves from my heifers and no problems.
His only drawback might be too much Final Answer with the Mustang heifers.

I've been looking myself and I've come up with Conneally Capitalist, Sitz investment or Coleman Regis. I'm leaning towards Capitalist. I'm waiting on a small group of heifers that were timed AI to Investment so if that goes well I'll probably repeat it.

Not proven but an interesting bull with solid ce pedigree... a Capitalist son from the dam of Regis...Coleman Venture

For proven sleep all night calving ease I would think 7AN368 Comrade would be hard to beat.
17 ced -3.3 bw 90% accuracy and he's in top 40% for all $ Value indexes with top 20% $EN and top 25% HP

Not on him but I used his sire in CA and in a rough country setting they'll weigh up right along with higher growth sires.
