Absolutely the first thing to investigate...

Logical thinking right there! This summer, had a heifer kicking her first calf hard enough to knot the calf's jaw up. Had a good lump for a day or two. But two front teats were awfully big. Sure it was tender. And the back two were getting a lot of action. She bagged up big time, a week early. She's done a great job though, milks plenty. Calf is growing just fine. Lump is gone. They sorted it out on their own.

I suppose they could break the jaw, could they not?

Break jaw? Absolutely. Swift kick to the head can kill a calf. But, "usually", they can take quite a bit.
