Sometimes they need help..

Postby Lazy M » Tue Feb 13, 2018 9:02 pm

2 heifers calved side by side on Sunday.

This one is convinced that the wrong one is hers. I've been spending a bunch of time trying to convince her otherwise.. :bang:

Ugghhh.... not a fun situation. Where I used to work, that happened a few times. Never an easy situation.

I had 3 born yesterday out of heifers. All within 30 ft of each other and calved about 30 min apart. Wrong calf started nursing while one heifer was eating afterbirth. Caught it pretty quick and separated them asap.

hasn't happened in a long time here, but I remember once when it did, in a way it was hilarious to watch, because even when she had accepted her calf, she still wanted the other one too, and she'd sidle up between the momma and her calf and show off her tits to try and steal it.
It can be incredibly frustrating if you don't have the facilities to keep them separated well enough

Had that happen last year with a couple of heifers... finally got it sorted out but it was a royal pain. Ended up penning one pair just to keep them separated. Good Luck!

I had a pair a few years ago that swapped and swapped and swapped until they just started taking turns at letting them both suck . It was quite entertaining

I had half sisters do that. Not sure either of those calves knew who their real mama was.

When I use to raise sheep they where bad about doing that. Some days I would have 10-15 ewes lamb. They would always be a couple ewes that wanted to claim the same lambs.

We calve heifers every year and it never fails as a group they will help raise each other's calves. As long as I see everyone eating I don't do much about it. They figure it out with their 2 nd calf. Usually... Lol
