One month to go

Postby lancemart » Sat Feb 23, 2008 4:16 am

My holstein will be calving in a month. Is there anything I should do beforehand. Any shots or minerals, vitamins etc. to give her. I don;t have any idea what to do if there is anything at all to do. I read about milk fever and I don't want that problem.

She's a heifer, isn't she? the chance of milk fever in a heifer is so small it's almost non-existant. Wouldn't worry about it. In your place I'd probably give a shot of Mu-Se or Multi-min about 2 weeks before she's due to hopefully ward off any problems with cleaning... but then my area is very deficient in selenium.

Basics needed to answer questions: age, weight, breed, sex. # affected vs # in group, feed type/amount, prior vaccinations, deworming, antibiotics, any recent changes....

More info = better answers.

I would give her a cup of kelp meal daily, and put a half of a cup of cider vinegar in her drinking water daily.

I'd do nothing, but check on her daily. Some first calf heifers can be dumb not knowing what to do, and sometimes there are complications during labor.

Good luck

WHY??

The kelp is for her and the calf, to bring them up on vitamins and minerals. The cider vinegar helps strengthen her reproductive organs, which makes it for easier calving and no retained placenta.

About the only thing in kelp meal in a substantial meaningful amount is iodine. The other so called micro nutrients are just that. Hardly measureable when fed at what most of the people that sell it recommend. It does do a pretty good job of keeping a horse from lathering.
