Got one

Post by Caustic Burno » Sat Jun 22, 2019 11:06 am

Finally got one of this sounder of eight.
They are trap wise. Irony is he got caught in the smallest trap.

Cb, in the past, I've had good luck building a pen in the woods and putting the trapped hogs in it and setting the trap next to it. Caught over 30 out of one Sounder that way. One or two at a time. Having live pigs seemed to make it easier to trap the others.

What's the density... for every one you get 10 more within a square mile?

Caught 82 last year off 90 acres.
I have 60 miles of paper company land to the north of me and 60 miles to the south. Lot of land for a lot of hogs to roam.

IF each adult reproduces itself only twice per year 2 adults + 4 babies = 6 hogs year
Then you have to remove 2/3 of population just to maintain the current population.

Each adult probably reproduces itself 4x that make it to adulthood so 2 + 8 = 10
Means you have to remove 80% of them every year just to prevent a population increase.

They aren't as fertile in the wild, but each adult sow and boar is capable of reproducing itself
10x per year. 2 + 20 = 22 hogs per year.

According to the state biologists that is the “Hog Eradication Expert” if you have a 100 hogs we have to trap 80 to stay at 100.
We have created an environment that has produced a better hog and lager litters due to deer feeders.
The picture is on my neighbors place.

Starting to have big problems around here, they do so much damage in the orchards. There is a group of guys that go out there with just a knife. Others a knife and dog. They don't get many but you wouldn't catch me hunting them without a rifle! An old guy i know used to go out on his horse and they would chase them then when close jump off and flick their back legs to make them roll and stab them in the heart. He was an adrenalin junkie. One day a big boar turn and opened his horse up right down the middle. Horse didn't get far after that and died. Going on a previous post my brother in law caught a small one and left it in a cage in a 20acre clearing, him and my nephew shot over a dozen that night.

Rifle is not very effective in this thicket single shot is all you need. Your only getting one shot. Traps are the most effective method followed by dogs.
I would rather have the hogs versus hog dogs. They create more work than their worth putting hogs through fences.
Typical terrain habitat picture and stand just FYI. Stand is overlooking the log road the hog was trapped on.

LOL... 80 out of 100 is 80%... I nailed it.
How much y'all paying for "Hog Eradication Experts" to sit around talking about it?
I'd be a great expert... as long as I don't actually have to be able to catch one. :tiphat:

I have no clue what TAMU is paying these guys with PhD to give us free seminars on hog eradication.
They will actually come out and help with locations and design of trap.
One of the state trappers is my neighbor, so I hear the latest tricks they are using. They mostly use the drop traps.

Traps are thrown and hogs in the traps.
Don’t know how many yet. I drove the truck down the road and checked with binoculars. Waiting on the rain to stop.

Do you think it would help if the State offered a small bounty for each one killed?
