Mr Fish

Postby alisonb » Sat Dec 08, 2012 11:20 pm

Mr Fish has hurt his back. This morning he can't move his rear legs, they just fold under him. He can't understand what is going on, his eyes don't leave me :cry2: . Please say it is only a temporary thing, if it has not improved by tomorrow we are off to the vet.....

If it should turn out to be bad disks in his back there is an operation (pricey) that can fix it. When it was still an experimental surgery the vet that was developing it did it to our old Basset hound. She had nearly 100% recovery and lived for 6 more years without needing any drugs. She finakllky died of old age at 14 years old

I've given him a Kortico injection and a pain killer, he's still the same but at least not in pain. Isn't it strange how animals develop problems on a Sunday when there is seldom a vet available.

Thanks for the concern and prayers, it is really appreciated.

Update
Monday : Mr Fish is not totally paralyzed, has para paresis - has feeling in tail, feet and back - the vet suspects a partially blown disk. He prescribes steroids, pain killer and cage rest. Fish just lies around and can't pee or poo. I make a support for his hind quarters out of an old T shirt, hitch him up like a wheel barrow and encourage him to walk(and pee+ poop). He hates it, won't co operate. I worry about possible kidney failure amongst other things.

Tuesday : Still dragging legs but at least he's eating, drinking, pooping + peeing. By afternoon I notice him almost balancing on his left back leg :D . By late afternoon he manages a verrrry wobbly walk, about 5ft - he needs to take it easy so I don't encourage him.

Wed : Up at 5am, Mr Fish is waiting at the door to go and do his business and check what predators are out there  . I have to restrain him, he has developed a wobbly little gait that is really hard to keep up with. Left leg much stronger than the right. I lock him in the house and go and work in one of the furtherest tunnels from the house, next minute who arrives - Mr Fish. He is resting now,I've had to tranquilize him a little as he just wants to follow me all over.

I know that anything can happen but recovery does look positive at this stage for the little chap. He is such a little ruffian, action dog I just don't see him quietening down soon and thus fear further injuries.

Prayers and hugs for Mr Fish and you Alison!! Just as we humans sometimes do, he must have moved, shifted, turned or just wiggled wrong and out went his back! I think animals rebound better than us 2-leggeds tho!
