I am not crazy about a sweet gum and usually take them out.
This one was so big I had the forester come out and measure it and it wasn't even in the top ten in the state.
I forget is was somewhere like 15, I had the second largest black hickory in the state on my place until Rita.

Caustic, you bring back some very old memories for me. The first deer I ever killed with a rifle I was in a sweetgum almost identical to that one. When I was a young teenager we had a ryegrass field that the deer loved. There was a huge sweetgum with four forks that grew on the edge of it. I helped daddy build a deer stand in it out of 2x4's. Daddy had a browning 300 mag. He let me use it and I killed a cowhorn from that stand with it. Up till then I'd only killed deer with a shotgun while dog hunting. Daddy give me that 300 and I traded it to my brother for a 270. The 300 was stolen. The field is a tree farm now. The old sweetgum has been gone for years. But I still have that deer's horns and a great memory of that old gum and I'll never forget it.

CB does sweet gum have any real use? Someone told me they used the big ones for cross ties at one time. I know they're worthless as firewood and about anything else I can think of.
