Why? I guess they didn't realise it was knee-deep mud.
What a farmer does with them depends on whether he likes magpies around the place or classes them as a pest.
I can assure you they were rescued from the mud within seconds of that photo being snapped.

The farm was the much sought after Manawatu silt loam, tending towards higher clay content at the back of the farm. It is indeed slippery when wet.
The little I've seen of Manawatu clays suggests I don't want to be farming on them with anything heavier than a goat.

I'm still trying to make out exactly what that picture with the mud is! We have some magpies around here, but they don't seem to cause much harm... crows on the other hand just ate the tops off my tobacco seedlings and I'm some kind of pizzed with them!
