Tail Ripped off

I go check cows late yesterday afternoon. See one limping, wife and I go this morning to catch her treat for foot rot. My wife notices another missing her tail. This is a big brangus type cow that had a long tail. Has only a 4 inch nub now. We bring her home clean it up treat for infection. Never seen this happen before. Cut off right through the bone. Don't see one stepping on it doing this. Way shorter than a docked milk cow. I'm sure she will be fine. Just crazy surprise. I don't name cows but might call her stubby :)

You think some hillbilly down there is collecting tails, Tom?

My father in law had one that got her tail bit off by a big logger head turtle while wading in a pond

Well you will have to sell her wholesale because you can't retail her.

Haha, that is a good comeback.

More often than not it is something that has compromised the blood supply and the lower part dies and looks normal until it just falls off when you notice it missing.

We had the exact same situation last summer with one. She gets along fine but she sure looks odd. All we can figure is that she got it caught in a fence and panicked.

We had a calf that lost half his tail to frostbite, named him Stumpy. Definitely got docked at the Sale Barn, which sucked because he ended up being one of the biggest steers that year.

She not limping, two different cows. One had tail ripped off ragged cut through the bone. A different cow had foot rot. Both breath normal.

You can bet then, either a wild dog, or it was stepped on by another....

You aren't buying my theory that it got caught up in a barbed wire fence and she simply tore it off trying to get away?

Anything is possible when it comes to cattle....you can throw- one-cow on a thousand acres...and there be a tiny spot of trouble...she'll find it..the old saying,, it's not if,, its when...
