limping steer

Postby fernandez0924 » Wed May 30, 2018 3:16 pm

Hi guys. My son has a 16 month old FFA steer who just started to limp on his hide leg. We noticed it last week. He only limps for a minute or two when he gets up or starts being worked, then it seems to go away. We have checked his hoofs and he doesn't seem to mind us lifting his leg or checking his muscles. Nothing in his joints feels hot near tendons. It kind of looks like his hip sways out of socket when he is limping, and goes right back in with each step. He's alone in his pasture, still eats fine, and has no other issues. We are waiting for the vet to call back. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Really just a big guess, 9 times out of 10 problem would be in the foot. Really too young for arthritis.

It does sound typical of early stages of foot rot. The swelling doesn't start showing right away, and as they get moving they will put more and more weight on it.

How big is he? At 16 months old, he should be getting pretty heavy. Possibly, he is laying on his leg and it is numb/pressure sore.
Are his toes getting too long? Or has one starting to tip up?
