High Mag block

Post by Jlsmith80 » Wed Jul 01, 2020 10:17 pm

I put out a high mag block for spring time for my steers was told to just leave it out but can a high mag block cause diarrhea when spring is over. Anyone use a bloat block to protect if so do you leave out all the time. Thanks

Why are you using a high mag for steers. It is only to prevent grass tetnus in cows with small calves.
My thoughts only, don't bet the farm on them. KT

A hi mag block and a bloat block are two different things. A hi mag block is for grass tetny. A sodium bicarbonate block is for bloat.
It really probably depends on what type of forage they are grazing. If they are on a field with a lot of alfalfa then a bloat block is a good idea. If it's just a grass pasture it's probably not necessary.
Around here we don't need to use mag blocks after April usually.
To much of anything can give them a belly ache. Switch them to a good summer loose min and see if they quit with the diarrhea.
Never fear them, but ALWAYS respect them.

Ample good green pasture typically causes varying degrees of loose stools. A proper dosage of quality wormer with perhaps a follow up treatment will help mitigate the issue.

Most Hi-Mag blocks and minerals use Mag-ox as the source for the magnesium but there is a chance they may have used magnesium sulfate which is Epsom salts. Surprised if they could consume enough at one time for it to scour them though but you never know. Otherwise shouldn't hurt a thing to leave it out.
