Hello from virginia's farmerjan

Postby farmerjan » Fri Sep 02, 2016 5:32 pm

Hi to everyone, so glad to have been referred here by greybeard. Put the basics in my profile, have been in the cattle business for alot of years, both dairy and beef. Hope to help anyone I can and learn as much as I can from others. My son and I run a cow/calf operation, and raise most of our replacement heifers but also buy and sell a few. I have several dairy cows and use them for milk and as nurse cows. Have been a milk tester for over 25 years and have milked on several farms over the years. Plan to retire within the next 5 years or sooner, and will be able to do more on the "home farm". We rent 75% of the land we utilize, calving 75 to 100 both spring and fall, and selling feeders in the 4-600 lb range. Due to the rented land we also make alot of hay , most places having fenced and unfenced land that we rent as whole farms. I am dealing with serious joint issues right now but am determined not to quit and exploring my options to be more mobile. Looking forward to being a member.

Thanks for the warm welcomes!! We are in the Shenandoah valley, Augusta/Rockbridge county line. If any of you go to Staunton Union Stockyards to market cattle I may have met you over time. Originally a transplanted yankee 35 years ago, I am an "adopted southerner" as some very good friends say. Hope to meet/see some of you in person sometime.
