New to cattle

Postby DerekA09 » Fri Jan 06, 2017 6:04 am

I'm from southern Illinois and I'm looking at starting my first venture with cattle. What are good ways to get started in this? (For getting started I must say I'm glad it's not 2014)

welcome. I recommend at least a million dollars top get started if you have no infrastructure or land and that will only get your feet wet.

Do you have any experience with cattle? If not, I'd strongly suggest you get some before getting cattle of your own. Otherwise you're heading for a train wreck.

And welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.
Find a farm that is needing some help and get a little experience with them. You obviously have been watching the markets/sales to know that 2014 was a year of very high prices. Have you any other experience with animals??? Sheep, goats, any kind of grazing type animals??? What do you have in the way of land/buildings/fences etc and so on?? Give us some background.

Welcome to the forum! So glad you could join.

When starting, know there will be mistakes. The more you prepare the less they will be. And don't try to start too big at first.

Best of luck! : )

Well I kind of just started without a concrete plan. I think I'd like to raise calves for the feedlot. I bought a cow/calf pair in June of this past year and then in October 2 heifers born march '16. I've only got 25 acres. It's got 5 acres of lots that are cattle panels and then the rest is woven wire fence. (Land is owned free and clear though)
