    Getting steer to eat!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. Some we took very seriously and tried and some, well.....thanks, anyway! Basically, my daughter did everything that was put in front of her. She fed twice a day, walked, my husband made a misting sprinkler so she could keep the steer cool. She...

Thank you.....I cringe at these shows, too. My dear friend becomes very competitive this time of year and I have to keep my distance to preserve the friendship.

    raising charolais for the fair

We are thinking that we can trim him....he's very gentle....gets sleepy when you rinse him with the hose and blow him dry. He loves to be brushed and we have been able to pick up his feet and exam them. He does just stand there. Maybe that's just this particular calf's personality, but he...

    Getting steer to eat!

Okay, thanks....yes she feeds twice a day. She's not discouraged, she doesn't know any better....it's Mr. Resident Expert that is shaking his head. We are trying to prove that we are doing everything we can, it's not us, but the calf. Also, the calf was given to daughter, so we didn't pick...

    Getting steer to eat!

This is apparently a bad thing......we are new at this.....just give us straightforward stuff, don't want to be a guinea pig in controversial stuff. Just want to get to the fair and be done with it.....want to do a good job of it though....not raise eyebrows along the way.....

    Getting steer to eat!

Well, he eats better now that we've added all the sweets, just not much, but I'll tell "THE BOSS" about it. We were doing hay everyday, but then Mr. Expert said to cut it back so he'll eat more feed to add finish....good grief......it's confusing, one says this another says that.......and the...

    Getting steer to eat!

Need some help........the steer doesn't really eat much. We are 40 some days away from the fair. June 5th he weighed 901. He's somewhat bigger, but not finishing off well. He doesn't eat all of his feed. At the suggestion of our resident expert we are now feeding a combo of things: calf...

    raising charolais for the fair

Okay, I have another "dumb" question. Is it okay for my daughter to hose the cow down when it is really hot outside. It was so hot here yesterday, we had trouble being outside for long periods of time. My daughter wanted to hose the cow down to cool him off. She did, but I didn't know if the...

    raising charolais for the fair

Wow! You must be a cowboy, you're cracking that whip on me! OUCH! I'm working on the pictures....I don't have a digital camera and I have to work around my friends schedule. She's going to come take the pics. It's her camera, I don't want the responsibility of dropping it in manure or...

Hey thanks! Not the fondest of our AG teachers, which is why we go 4-H, but I can ask them that. Thanks, for the input. I'll tell my husband to put the horse stuff away!
