One of our farms soil varies significantly from sand rises to silt loam flats. We've been planting veldt grass on the rises and phalaris on the flats. Just wondering how much this affects animal performance when they go from one to the other within a week or few days etc.?
Thanks for all the replies. We've never fed these cows grain. They get hay but it's already generally in place. I've got them on some pretty rain damaged swath grazing at the moment and they're not too excited about cleaning it up so I'm wearing earplugs each move! They're fat just missing fresh...
They're rotated in
They're rotated on pretty good pasture although it's drying up. Approx 20acre cells. I thought they needed to replenish semen after a certain period?
Have had 3x young bulls in with 70heifers for 45days and am looking at buying another 90 heifers to mate and trade. Thinking about resting bulls for 6weeks and then putting them in. This is a bit out of season for us but think they will sell well. Nice heifers. Is 6weeks long enough? They...
We move cattle often sometimes everyday but more often I try to stretch it to between 3 and 5 days. I like having them trained but I don't like the behaviour of them all carrying on whenever the motorbike starts up. I'm thinking about going to automatic lift up hotwires so they don't associate...
Thanks guys. I have tried direct burying it and it gets eaten through pretty quick. I was thinking the skid steer and just dig a trench with the bucket would be quite quick just don't want to mess around with the pvc. But maybe best option. I was going to go 20ft high with overhead abd they're...
Thanks guys. I hadn't really thought about muddy gates but that'd be a good reason to go over as well. I just don't like the idea of putting hotwire under ground we have termites that chew and forever chasing leaks under ground. Plus it's a big job trenching everything. We've refenced a whole...
We've been using a single wire with two insulated handles either end in front of steel gates to join electric fence sections. It's a bit of a pain to open and fails at times from kinking. Thinking about going overhead instead of underground. Anyone got any tips? Similar to pic
Hi everyone, we are looking to build a new holding yard to receive cows off pasture. As our herd is increasing we have outgrown out current temporary panel setup.
How much room per cow/calf do they need? They don't come into the yards very often so I'm thinking a little more than average...
