The fourth annual �Southern Trend Setting Sale� held in Clemson, SC and sponsored by the South Carolina Gelbvieh Association shall have to be renamed the �National Trend Setting Sale� after the sawdust settled on this beautiful spring day in South Carolina. The on-the-farm, hand selected sale offering was the best ever and the big crowd of buyers showed their appreciation with active bidding.
Topping the sale at $10,500 (and it appears to be quite habit forming) was a consignment from Little Windy Hill Farm, Doug Hughes, Max Meadows, Va., with his proven donor cow and her beautiful calf, lot #54/54A. This 1995 Sherman Tank daughter (the dam of the $18,000 valued Absolute Black Bull) had an exquisite JNS Mr. Image 6E ET (�6E�) heifer calf at side. She is immediately destined for the donor herd for Schroeder Ranch, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Exiting the sale ring on a final bid of $9,100 was a phenomenal Freedom X 79D daughter consigned by Lazy W Ranch, Danny Whaley, Abbeville, S.C. This heifer should continue her already marvelous show career for the fortunate buyer, 4 Bar Cattle Co. of Ninety Six, S.C.
Rising to the top of the pack was a 3-N-1 package offered by Hay Diddle Diddle Farm, Bob and Claire Bradberry from Honea Path, S.C. with their lot #46/46A. This was the only pair that was split in the ring and sold individually. The August Freedom heifer calf was simply powerful � she sold for $3,000 to Davidson Farms from Duncan, S.C. The August '98 Polled Gizmo cow sold to Jordan Farms, Phillip Jordan from Garrison, Ky. for a very respectable $4,650. Jordan Farms consistently bid on the top quality lots.
Another pair had numerous friends in the crowd as rapid bidding activity quickly moved the pair to the final $6,100 final bid. Lot #45/45A, consigned by Partisover Ranch of Colbert, Ga. featured a black October Freedom bull calf that will surely see the show ring in his future. His dam was a black daughter of CTR Echo out of Partisover's great �Pillsbury� donor cow. Silvey Family Gelbvieh from Clarksville, Tenn. earned the right to this impeccable pair. Dr. Gary Silvey continues to gather together elite quality genetics.
Dave Linker of Blacksburg, Va. purchased the high selling open heifer for $5,700. Dave found that his former employer, Hickory Hill Farm, continued the tradition he started and offered some of their very best at this type of high profile sale. Lot #9 was a Carolina Prime Time homozygous black February daughter tracing back to the infamous 238 Cow family � she too could be extremely competitive on the show circuit.
When Lazy S Gelbvieh from Ball Ground, Ga. walked the Lot #11 Freedom open heifer into the sale ring, the bidders wasted little time with their approval. Buying this voluminous, loose hided, brood cow prospect for $5,100 was Jordan Farms, Phillip Jordan of Garrison, Ky.
Lot #40/40A, a consignment from Hay Diddle Diddle Farm of Honea Path, SC sold for $5,200 to Twin Ash Farms, Jim Phelps from Lexington, Ky. Jim Phelps continued his effort to select the very best genetics available (recall his purchase of the futurity champion and the Denver National Champion). The cow was a typical Polled Summit female � absolutely fault free in every aspect and her December Freedom bull calf had herdsire written all over him. Such was the offering at the Southern Dream IV Sale!!
TJB Gelbvieh from Chickamauga, Ga. offered a unique black Jetstream heifer safe in calf to JBOB Black Image and out of the fantastic dam of Freedom, BB Miss 61Y. Here was an extra fancy, �goose fronted,� feminine yearling heifer that has an extremely bright future. Purchasing this lot#23 for $5,000 was Goose Creek Gelbvieh, Anna Ramsey, and Jennings Smith from Marion, NC. Watch for future opportunities to purchase embryos from this fine female.
Putting together a powerful group of females out of the matriarch HBZ 437Y cow (donor cow owned by Randall Farms, Seneca, SC) was M&P Gelbvieh, Mark Goes of Odell, Neb. He purchased all three lots that had the 437Y cow influence � lot 44/44A, Randall Farms consignment, $4,400; Jo-Lyn Farm, Joel Shirley of Bowersville, Ga. consignments � lots #37/37A and #21 for $4,250 and $4,200 respectively. This will be a solid foundation for M&P Gelbvieh � Mark Goes did his homework well!
Thirteen additional lots sold in a range from $3,000 to $3,400 with active bidding coming from all over the country. The Gelbvieh breed has definitely reached a level of acceptance that is continuing to gather new �friends� from coast to coast.
