April 21, 2001
Georgetown, Ky.
Four Gelbvieh breeders with over 40 years of combined experience in breeding Gelbvieh cattle gathered their efforts on April 21 in Georgetown, Ky. and offered their “work” at public auction. A respectable size crowd plus numerous telephone bids showed appreciation for the sale lots presented by S&S Gelbvieh, Arthur and David Slaughter of Fredonia, KY; McIntosh Farms, Clifford, Faye and Steve McIntosh of Georgetown, Ky.; Wynn Gelbvieh, Jimmy Wynn of Georgetown, Ky.; and J&D Kerstiens, Jerome Kerstiens of Jasper, Ind.
Topping the sale at $5,400 was Lot #34, a proven donor cow offered by McIntosh Farms. MMHF Betsy was a Polled Patriot 1997 model with big time performance EPD's. Her Stonewall bull calf will have to be reckoned with because he is destined for greatness. Purchasing “Betsy”, who by the way has produced a $3,200 and $3,700 open heifer in high profile sales, was Twin Ash Farms, Lexington, Ky. Jim Phelps continues to wisely invest in these top quality red females.
Arthur Slaughter offered the high selling pair when his Lot #24/24A consignment left the ring at $5,200. Purchasing the beautiful young black first calf heifer, sired by TLR Cocoa 35C, was Jordan Farms, Phillip Jordan from Garrison, Ky. Here was an extremely level topped, clean lined, beautifully balanced young lady with impeccable EPD's and phenotype to “burn.” Her 10/15/00 black heifer calf by JBOB Carolina Parkway had several friends in the crowd also, but the winning bid went to Tyler Bitzer, Shelbyville, Ky.
Generating a great deal of excitement was Arthur Slaughter's Lot #1 yearling black bull sired by the WAM Stonewall bull. ALS Kentucky Powerball was a well muscled, moderate framed, wide quartered, tight sheathed youngster that traced to Polled Patriot and the Slaughter's renowned donor cow, TJB Ms Alpine Lace 128Z ET. His new home will be in the pastures of Blackhawk Cattle Co., Skyler Martin of Oregon, Ill., with the final bid of $3,600.
Lot 22/22A was a pair that Jimmy Wynn brought to town and decided to split in the ring – he was not disappointed when the gavel dropped at $3,250. Purchasing the young cow sired by JRI PLD New Wave was Twin Ash Farms of Lexington, Ky. This young lady exhibited a beautiful teat/udder development, excellent depth of rib and a super hip structure all of which she passed on to her November heifer calf that sold to Tyler Bitzer of Shelbyville, Ky.
Twin Ash Farms from Lexington, Ky. made their presence known immediately when they purchased the first pair in the sale, Lot 43/43A. Consigned by David Slaughter, TJB Ms Battenburg Lace ET, a ‘JR' daughter of Alpine Lace had a marvelous JRI PLD Resource bull calf at side. The final bid of $3,100 was a great value when considering the strength of the genetic package that Twin Ash Farms' purchased.
Steve Smith Gelbviehs, Lehi, Utah once again made his presence known by selecting the Lot #4 open heifer offered by McIntosh Farms and Daniel Smith. This April 3, 2000 red polled heifer sired by Grand Prix and tracing to the phenomenal FLK Hochger 108N cow (the influence dam of numerous show and sale toppers) has tremendous possibilities both genetically and competitively. Watch for her this summer and fall – Steve Smith made and excellent buy at $2,400.
Lot 33/33A, consigned by David Slaughter, also generated excitement when the gates swung open. This pair sold for $2,900 to Ron & Phyllis Rose of Richmond, KY. Here was an ALS Electric Spark X Black Innovator 1997 model cow with a black, yes black, Polled Patriot heifer calf at side that drew reviews from the sale day participants.
The rapid fire sale saw many of the pairs leave the sale arena at $2,300 to $2,800 per pair as the crowd showed their approval with their checkbooks. Volume buyers were active bidders throughout the sale as they purchased sixteen pairs for their program. Ron & Phyllis Rose of Richmond, Ky. have established a solid base for their Gelbvieh program.
