The weather cooperated with the sale dates to make the Polled Gold Santa Gertrudis Sale a memorable occasion. On May 5, 2001, Ed and Barbara Herring opened Cotton Branch Plantation in Meadville, Miss. to a large crowd of Santa Gertrudis enthusiasts. As usual, the Herrings were fantastic hosts and the offering of cattle was exceptionally good.

Auctioneer Steve Bonham worked the auction. The high selling bull, a joint offering from Bud Shanks, Shanks Farms, of Cookville, Tennessee, and Darrell Pitchford, Pitchford Cattle Company, of Athens, Texas, brought $6,000. This son of National Best of Polled Champion, Shakers Playboy 720, had big numbers! BW 78 lbs., WW 560 lbs. 112 day ADG 3.66, 112 day WDA 3.55, final ADG Ration 105.32, and a whopping ribeye area of 16.82 inches. REA/cwt 1.3, IMF 3.97, final WPDA ratio 16.95, FTU 0.18 and weight of 1320. This impressive bull will make a stellar addition to Phillip & Dorothy Sanfield's herd at PS Ranch in Terrell, Texas.

The second high selling bull was offered by Robert Silva of Krebs, Okla. The bull 346/9 brought $5,400. He is a double polled son of Grizzly 3308. His dam is a daughter of Silva's polled foundation herd sire Hurricane 9222. Bull 346/9 also had an impressive set of numbers to demonstrate how proven performance and carcass merit can be combined in a polled package. His BW was 80 lbs., 205 adj. 638, 365 adj. 1091, WDA 297, scrotum circumference of 37 inches. The ultrasound numbers showed a ribeye area of 15.8 inches, with an intramuscular fat of 4.11, REA/cwt. 1.25 and BF .27. Alan Cox of Cox Mill Farms of Sanford, N.C. was buyer.

Top selling female was offered by Dennis Jones of Gray Oaks Farm, Russellville, Ala. Female 729 brought $4,250 and sold to T.A. Jackson & Son of Lou-Al-Tuck Farm in Great Falls, S.C. She is a W.H. Creel's Little Ben 733 daughter with a Polled Chief 1/4 heifer calf at side. GO 729 sold bred to Red Warrior 1088, a top son of Geronimo. Two pair shared the second high selling female spotlight. Both were offered by Vernon Lane, City View Farms of Decatur, Ala. CVF 818 is a young cow out of Cheek's 9/94 with a Geronimo heifer calf at side. She sold bred to Traveler 10/1. Parker Farms of Cave City, Ky. paid $3,300 for this quality 3n1. Also selling of for $3,300 was CVF 6/8. This cow was another Cheek's 9/94 daughter with a Geronimo heifer calf at side and bred back to Traveler 10/1. She sold to Shaker Hill Farms, Lebanon, Ohio.
