October 13, 2001
Knoxville, Tenn.

The Tennessee and Virginia Gelbvieh Associations joined forces and held their first annual Gelbvieh Sale in Knoxville on October 13th.

Terry Brown of North Carolina did a fine job of on-the-farm screening of the sale cattle as the buyers showed their approval with their checkbooks and wallets.

Topping the sale at $3,650 was an ET Freedom daughter bred for a Balancer® calf. This pedigree touted the merits of the great HBZ 437Y cow that was featured in an article in the October Gelbvieh World. Red Hill Valley Gelbvieh, Cleveland, Tenn., offered this popular package and Floyd Farms, Ray Floyd of Waynesboro, Ga., continued to gather together some of the top genetics in the breed by having the final bid.

Floyd Farms, Waynesboro, Ga. struck again when another Freedom daughter entered the sale ring. Butler Creek Farms from Milton, Tenn. continued their reputation for “selling the good ones” with their open January Freedom daughter. Ray Floyd's winning bid was $2,650.

Tying for next high selling honors was Little Windy Hill Farms of Max Meadows, Va. and EIO Farms, Abner Mullinix, Riceville, Tenn. when their consignments garnered $2,400 each. Lot #1, LWHF Virginia Gentleman, a “6E” son that is a full brother to the great LWHF Black Imagination bull was a bargain at $2,400 when he found a new home at Koopsma Gelbvieh, Canton, SD. EIO Farms' homozygous black pair, (dam sired by Bouncer and her calf sired by M/L Encore) had many friends before Jack Mullins from Sneedville, Tenn. won the bidding war for Lot #58/58A.

Arthur Slaughter, Fredonia, Ky. brought a dandy pair (Lot #49/49A) from the heart of his herd that was split in the ring for $2,350. Buying the March Freedom bull was Robert Asbury, Speedwell, Tenn. while the dam sired by Rolls Roych went to Jack Mullins from Sneedville, Tenn. Asbury and Mullins shared another pair when they purchased lots 50 and 50A for $2,300. David Slaughter consigned this pair – dam by Jetstream and terrific bull calf by JBOB Carolina Power.

Another pair left the ring at $2,300 when Little Windy Hill Farm, Doug Hughes of Max Meadows, Va. offered a '95 KCF Bennett Value F95 cow with a marvelous JNS Mr. Image 6E ET “6E” heifer calf at side. The cow was safe in calf to the $85,000 LWHF Fearless bull. New breeder, David Watters, Perkasie, Pa., had the final bid at $2,300.

Volume buyer for the sale was Jack Mullins, Sneedville, Tenn. with his purchase of 15 lots.

Auctioneer: Kevin Thompson, Rogersville, Tenn.
