A nice sunny day greeted the largest crowd to date at the 14th Annual Yon Family Farms Performance Tested Angus & Charolais Bull Sale. The sale was held at the farm in Ridge Spring, S.C. on February 21, 2004. A total of 123 bulls sold, with 113 yearling Angus bulls selling for an average of $2,842, and 10 yearling Charolais bulls averaging $1,870.
Of the top five selling bulls, three were full brothers by Twin Valley Precision E161 out of the now deceased Hazel “A08” cow. Lot 15 was the top seller at $6,100 to United Producers in Columbus, Ohio. His brother, Lot 11, sold to RM Watson's Sons in Ridge Spring, S.C., at $5,300 with the Lot 14 bull at $5,000 to Buffalo Creek (Joe Costner) in Lawndale, N.C. Chris Hardee of Hardee Farms selected the second high seller, at $5,500 to use in their progressive program in Chiefland, Fla. He was Lot 4, a son of Bon View New Design 878. Another 878 son, Lot 2, was the pick of Ray Galloway in Darlington, S.C. at $5,000. The top Charolais bull went to Lindsey Cattle Company in Trenton, Fla. at $2,500 and he was Lot 138.
Over 41 percent of the bulls sold to repeat buyers from the Yon performance program, with nine of the top ten selling bulls going to repeat customers. United Producers, Columbus, Ohio, purchased eight bulls for their lease program, making them the volume buyer of the day. The vast majority of the bulls were sold to commercial cattlemen for use in their programs.
As an added attraction to the sale, the Yon's also sponsored their Open House, offering special deals on Powder River equipment, Tru Test Scales, and Stafix Fencing, feed, minerals, and animal health products.
Yon Family Farms hosts two annual sales on the third Saturday in February and on the first Saturday in November each year in Ridge Spring. You may contact the Yons to be added to their mailing list at kyon@pbtcomm.net or (803) 685-5048.
