Yon Family Farms hosted its first Fall Bull & Female sale on November 6, 2004 at the farm in Ridge Spring, S.C. Coming 2-year old bulls were the highlight of the sale, with 46 Angus and 11 Charolais offered. The top selling Angus bull was Lot 8, a son of Yon New Design K57, that offered calving ease with powerful performance. He was selected by David Mackey, Pisgah Forest, N.C., for $4,750. Second high bull was Lot 2 who was the favorite of Carey Mickell, Hartwell, Ga. Lot 2 was a son of SAF 598 Bando 5175 and sold for $4,500. Rounding out the top three was a son of Leachman Right Time, who sold as Lot 4. He sold to Scott Brothers in Kenly, N.C. for $4,100. Three bulls sold for $4,000 including Lot 1, Lot 7, and Lot 12. They were selected by Earl Thrailkill, Fort Lawn, S.C.; David Mackey, Pisgah Forest, N.C.; and Keith McDonald, Blackstock, S.C., respectively. The 46 Angus bulls averaged $3,118, with demand strong throughout the sale. Especially sought after were those bulls that offered calving ease with powerful growth and performance to boot.
In the Charolais bull division, Lot 51, a Duke 914 son, was the high seller at $2,900 and he was selected by Andrew Carter for C & H Farm in Ehrhardt, S.C. Following at $2,800 was Lot 53, a son of Wyoming Wind, to Clay Bussell in Sandersville, Ga. The eleven Charolais Bulls averaged $2,327.
The bulls all stayed relatively close to home, selling to progressive cattlemen in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Volume buyer of the sale was United Producers, housed in Ohio, who purchased seven bulls for five of their Southeastern lease customers. Earl Thrailkill from Fort Lawn, S.C., purchased four Angus bulls for use in his operation.
Following the Bull Sale, was a strong offering of females from the heart of the Yon Performance program. The top selling Angus pair was Lot 69/69A at $4,800. The cow by Connealy Dateline sold to Mike Price in Abbeville, S.C. and her fall heifer calf by GAR Expectation was selected by Stan and Annette Epps in Iva, S.C. The second high pair was Lot 62/62A at $4,600 with the Connealy Freightliner daughter going to Riverview Farm in Little Mountain, S.C. Her fall heifer by CA Future Direction was selected by Gray Davis in Saluda, S.C. for his Black's Peak Farm. In the bred heifer division, the top seller was Lot 95, daughter of New Horizon. She sold for $2,750 to Sarrat Farms located in Roebuck, S.C. The volume buyer of Angus females was Gray Davis who selected seven head for his Angus operation in Saluda, S.C. Selecting six head was Mark Blackwelder, Concord, N.C. A total of 48 Angus female lots averaged $2,502.
Ten Charolais female lots sold for an average of $2,160.
Open House specials were held on cattle handling equipment, fencing, seed, cattle feeders, hay rings, and mineral feeders. The auction was lively, and there was a standing room only crowd. Mike Jones served as auctioneer for the event. Darren Carter worked the telephones and David Gazda, Floyd Wampler, Steve McGill, and Luke Mobley served as ringmen. The sale was managed by Yon Family Farms.
