Forty buyers from across the southeast traveled to the Upper Coastal Plains Substation on Aug. 27 to purchase some of west Alabama's best, performance-tested heifers.
This year's Ag-O-Rama Heifer Sale, sponsored by the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Program (BCIA), boasted 120 open, Brangus-Simmental-Angus sired and three Charolais sire bred heifers from 16 BCIA breeders.
Presentations were made prior to the start of the sale to Randall Rawls and Johnny Morrow for their dedication to the promotion and success of the event.
Top bred heifer honors go to Gary Ward of Coffee Creek Farm in Winfield, Ala. Ward's three heifers brought $1,175 each from Wilburn Mize of Mize Farms in Haleyville, Ala.
Two heifers offered by Dan Tomlin of Circle T Farm in Kennedy, Ala., and two heifers offered Jamey Clary of Twin Creeks Farm in Akron, Ala., share the top open heifer title. John Hill of Marianna, Fla., purchased all four heifers for $1,050 each.
The top volume buyer, Paul Ray of Ray Cattle Company in Hackleburg, Ala., bought 55 open heifers ranging in price from $725 to $1,025 each.
2005's Ag-O-Rama sale grossed $106,155.00 total sales. The average sale price for the 120 open animals offered was $855.25, while the average price for the three bred heifers offered was $1,175.
Michelle Elmore, Alabama BCIA Manager, said, “The performance level and uniformity of the heifers from this sale's consignors showcase the strength of our breeder's programs and the quality of BCIA-associated cattle.”
The Alabama BCIA is a non-profit organization seeking to promote, educate and facilitate the use of performance testing, record keeping and marketing opportunities to improve the Alabama cattle industry. BCIA is composed of persons, firms, partnerships, and corporations in the State of Alabama who are engaged in the production and marketing of purebred and commercial beef cattle. Formed in 1964, BCIA cooperates with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) of Auburn University under a formal agreement and is guided under a 20 member board consisting of producers, industry leaders, research personnel and extension professionals.
