Eighteen breeders from Alabama offered nearly 350 head of cattle at the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association's (BCIA) Seventh Annual Herd Builder Sale.

The event, held at the Alabama Livestock Auction in Uniontown, Ala. on Aug. 26, featured 259 bred heifers, 74 open heifers and 11 bred cows with complete performance records.

James and Tina Coker, a father and daughter team who are co-owners of Rafter J Ranch in Hayneville, Ala., offered two F-1 Brahman Simmental heifers which tied for the top open heifer title. Jimmy Lane Broussard of Newbern, Ala. purchased both animals for $1,100 each.

The day's top bred heifer went to Joshua Kellon Beaver of JB Farms in West Blocton, Ala. The Brangus Simmental heifer, purchased from Johnny Morrow of Morrow Farms in Tuscaloosa, Ala., fetched $1,700.

N-V Cattle's Bob Neel of While, Ga., purchased the sale's top bred cow, a commercial Angus, from Gordon Burkhalter of Burkhalter Farms in Clanton, Ala. The cow was purchased for $1,325.

Top volume buyer honors went to Jimmy Sealy of Sealy & Sons in Uniontown, Ala. Sealy bought a total of 35 bred heifers from three breeders: John Williamson of Williamson Cattle Co. in Faunsdale, Ala.; Chip Beeker of Beeker Catfish and Cattle in Eutaw, Ala.; and, Jack Rhodes of Pine Grove Ranch in Newbern, Ala.

The 344 animals sold at this year's Herd Builder Sale grossed $390,725.

Bred heifers accounted for $315,735 of the sale's grand total and averaged $1,219 each, while bred cows added $13,225 and averaged $1,202.27 each.

Open heifers made up $61,765 of the auction's total and averaged $834.66 each.

“Once again this sale has proven to be a great success,” said Kevan Tucker, Herd Builder Sale coordinator. “Our breeders offered a select group of quality replacements that will work for years to come.”

Michelle Elmore, Alabama BCIA manager, added, “This sale auctions top quality replacement females that provide results valued by producers across the South.”
