A standing room only crowd gathered for the Camp Cooley Ranch Blazing News Trails Annual Production Sale, an action packed, three-day event that showcased nearly 1100 head of registered Angus, Brangus and Charolais seedstock. Beautiful fall weather, high quality genetics and unprecedented customer service aspects greeted almost 700 prospective buyers from 29 states, who came to purchase cattle from the south's premier genetic supplier.
A deep line-up of herd sires and donor females drove the sale's strong final average, but the sale barn was packed with progressive commercial cattlemen purchasing rancher bulls ranging in price from $1,500 to $5,000.
In addition to attending the sale buyers could also listen to a live simulcast on Camp Cooley's website and active bidding throughout the sale occurred over the phone.
Leading off the sale's offering as the high seller was the popular Angus bull, Cooley Laredo 163P14. This son of the carcass legend CA Future Direction 5231 packed together chart topping performance with exceptional carcass numbers ranking in the top one percent in the breed for $ Beef with a $55.14 along with low birth and high growth. Active bidding on Laredo finished at $82,000 with the final bid being placed by Mike Rutherford, Rutherford Ranches in Houston, Texas for full possession and one-half semen interest in this exciting young sire.
Starkey Lazy S Ranch in Dallas, Texas selected the second high selling Angus, Cooley El Paso 4919 for $17,000. El Paso combined a tool box full of traits to build with and lined up rock solid stats for lowering birth weight and improving carcass merit. Bill Starkey purchased full possession and one-half interest in this yearling Future Direction son.
During the Brangus bull sale Mike Weathers, Columbus, Texas, bought the high selling bull. The proven herd sire and ever popular, Brinks Bright Side 607L11 commanded an impressive final bid of $45,000. Weathers purchased one-half interest and full possession in this young sire who has claimed a dominance over young herd sires in the breed.
After purchasing his mother as the high selling lot in the female Bill Davis of Chimney Rock Brangus, Concord, Ark., returned to pay $44,000 to own Lot 105, Newt of Brinks 302P16. This balanced calving ease specialist, sired by the popular Lead Gun, was a crowd favorite throughout the sale.
Cooley Winchester 4626, a VWC Ultimate Wind son topped the Charolais offering for $10,000. Rusty Taylor from Port St. Lucie, Fla., purchased this yearling whose rare combination of rugged good looks, functionality and performance made him a sale favorite.
Finishing a close second was Cooley Hawken 116P9. Rainbow's End Ranch, owned by Jason Schoenfelder, Buffalo, Texas raised their hand to purchase full possession and one-half interest in this wide based Hoodoo Crook son for $9,000. Hawken posted impressive growth and carcass numbers in a flashy, functional package.
The exceptional Brangus female offering was led off by Miss Brinks Geronimo 302H6, the dam of the 2005 National Junior Brangus Show Champion Female and Newt of Brinks, the second high selling Brangus bull. 302H6 was a sale favorite, who could be a picture model of a perfect Brangus female and was purchased for $45,000 by Chimney Rock Brangus of Concord, Ark. and James Bell of Gentry, Ark.
Garnering an impressive $40,000 final bid was Miss Brinks Transformer 795H. Destined to enter history as one of the legendary females in the breed, 795H is the dam of Hickok, Cody, Morgan, Gunsmoke, Earp and Virgil, all high sellers during the Brangus bull sale. Mike Weathers, a new Brangus breeder from Columbus, Texas, selected 795H to lead his exciting donor program.
Klaus Birkel and the entire Camp Cooley Ranch staff extended a huge round of thanks to everyone who purchased cattle, attended the sale and placed bids for the confidence they placed in the Camp Cooley program.
