Ridge Spring, S.C.
Yon Family Farms hosted its second Fall Bull and Female Sale on November 5, 2005 at the farm in Ridge Spring, S.C. Coming 2-year-old bulls were the first group to sell, with 66 forage-developed bulls averaging $2,927. The top selling bull was Lot 2, a son of Bon View New Design 208 to Spanish Oakes Farm in Blackstock, S.C. He offered excellent EPD's in all areas and was a powerful bull. Yon Expectation P315, who sold as Lot 5, commanded the 2nd top selling price at $4,700 for Darrell and Karen Quarles, Johnston, S.C. Rounding out the top three was Lot 8 at $4,400. He was a stout growth bull by Yon Southern Rock L26 and was the favorite of Ed and Grace Satcher from Ridge Spring, S.C. The fourth high selling bull was selected by Jeff Flowe from York, S.C., who chose Lot 7, a Future Direction son at $4,200. Lot 1, a New Design 208 son and Lot 4, an Expectation son, completed the top five at $4,100 each to Robert Duvall, Westminister, S.C., and Mike Chandler, Sardis, Ga., respectively. Bidding was active though out the sale with calving ease bulls that offered powerful growth being the most popular bulls of the day. Goldsboro Hog Farm located in North Carolina, as well as Mike Chandler from Sardis, Ga., were volume buyers at the sale. United Producers, housed in Ohio, was also a volume buyer, purchasing seven bulls for their Southeastern bull leasing customers. All the bulls stayed relatively close to home with most of the bulls going to progressive commercial cattlemen in South Carolina, North Caroina, and Georgia.
Following the Bull Sale, registered Angus females were next in the sale order. Top selling female was Lot 84, Yon Burgess K63, a PAPA Durabull daughter with an October 2005 heifer calf at side by SAV 8180 Traveler 004. She sold for $5,000 to Harry Tobin whose Angus operation is in Lodge, S.C. Also selling at $5,000 was Lot 89/89A with the bred cow by Coneally Freightliner going to Jeff Pitts in Little Mountain, S.C. for $2,400 and the fancy January 2005 show prospect by Future Direction finding a new home in Loudon, Tenn., with Ken and Beth Gentry at $2,600. The third high Angus lot sold for $4,700 and was Lot 90/90A, with the cow going to Byron Dasher from Augusta, Ga., at $2,700 with her January 2005 heifer selling for $2,000 to the Gentry's in Tennessee. The top bred heifers sold for $3,500 each with Gray Davis, Saluda, S.C., selecting Lot 97, a Burgess daughter by Twin Valley Precision E161. The other high seller was a Lot 110, a BCC Bushwacker daughter who was the choice of Robert Wagener, Loudon, Tenn. The top bred cow was a daughter of Papa Durabull, Yon Hazel K152, who sold as Lot 111 and brought a price of $3,600, selling to Dickie Smith from Black Rock, Ark. The 43 Angus female lots sold for an average of $3,074. Many Angus buyers took home three to four lots to add to their Angus programs in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas.
Finishing up the sale was a strong group of twelve registered Charolais female lots which averaged $2,037. The obvious Charolais favorite of the day was Lot 129, a bred heifer by Cigar, due to Wyoming Wind. She sold for $3,000 to K& P Cattle in Hartwell, Ga., who was the volume Charolais buyer of the day, along with Jeff Flowe from York, S.C.
Open House specials were held on cattle handling equipment, fencing, seed, cattle feeders, hay rings, and mineral feeders. The auction was lively, and there was a standing room only crowd. Mike Jones served as auctioneer for the event. Darren Carter worked the telephones and David Gazda, Floyd Wampler, Steve McGill, and Luke Mobley served as ringmen. The sale was managed by Yon Family Farms.
