A beautiful fall day set the stage for the 4th Yon Fall Angus Female and Bull Sale in Ridge Spring, S.C. on November 3, 2007. Females sold first, with tremendous interest in the Lot 1 offering from the Yon Sarah family. The Yon Sarah family is known for extremely high ultrasound EPD's, super growth numbers, and stellar production records. The top seller was Lot 1B, Yon Sarah S260, a bred heifer by Retail Product, due to SS Objective and she was the selection of Mike Gillespie, Dobson, N.C., for $10,000. Lot 1A, Yon Sarah T260, by CA Future Direction, sold as the top open heifer of the day at $7,000 to Sarratt Farms, in Gaffney, S.C. and Jac's Ranch in Bentonville, Ark. Third high selling female lot was the confirmed heifer pregnancy of Yon Sarah N170, due to SS Objective for a March 2008 calf at $4,750 to John Wessel, from Garber, Iowa.
Other high selling lots included Yon Burgess T29, an open heifer sired by CA Future Direction and from the Yon Burgess G05 cow, who sold as Lot 11 to Turkey Hollow in Oakboro, N.C. for $3,800. Top Spring Pair at $4,700 was Lot 50 with the bred cow going to Franklin Lindsay, Clinton, N.C. for $3,000 and her January calf, Lot 50A selling to Happy Hills Angus in West Pointe, Ga., for $1,700. The top Fall Pair was Lot 38, with an outstanding baby Traveler 004 heifer calf at side, and was selected by Gazda Cattle Company, Athens, Ga., at $3,300. Demand for all the groups of females from open heifers to pairs was solid, with the 85 females averaging a strong $2,796.
Next the bull buyers gathered around to bid on the 68 forage developed coming 2-year-old Angus Bulls. The top selling bull at $6,800 was selected by Wesley Woods, Madison Heights, Va. and Tucker Family Farms in Amherst, Va. He sold as Lot 87 and was a son of CA Future Direction, boasting Ultrasound EPD's ranking in the top one percent of all non-parent Angus bulls for %IMF, Ribeye, and $Beef Index. The second high selling bull was Lot 93 a performance packed son of GAR Yield Grade at $6500 to Bobby Lovett, Cuthbert, Ga. The Lovetts also purchased Lot 95, a massive son of BT Right Time 24J, at $5,500. Two bulls sold for $6,000 each. Repeat customer, McDuffie Feed and Seed from Thomson, Ga., selected Lot 88 and Buddy Keller from Harlem, Ga. chose Lot 89. Rounding out the top sellers were Lot 96 at $5,250 and 90 at $5,000, who sold to repeat customers, Parker Brothers, in Monroe, N.C., and Franklin Lindsay, from Clinton, N.C. Demand for the Angus bulls was excellent with the final average at $3,188.
As a new twist, the entire auction was broadcast live on the internet by DV Auctions, allowing folks from far and wide to view the auction. A few lots were sold over the internet, but most buyers were local progressive cattlemen residing in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina. Cattle sold into nine states which also included, Iowa, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Buyers and visitors enjoyed a delicious beef stew lunch prepared and served up by the Yon's neighbors. The sale is truly a community event with many neighbors pitching in to extend some of the hospitality from the Ridge. Visitors also had the opportunity to take advantage of “Sale Specials” on hay rings, Tru-test Weigh systems, and Powder River Equipment. The next opportunity to purchase Yon bulls at auction will be on February 16th, 2008 when they will host the 18th Annual Feburary Bull Sale in Ridge Spring.
