Yon Family Farms hosted its third Fall Bull and Female Sale on November 4, 2006 at the farm in Ridge Spring, SC. Coming 2-year-old bulls were the first group to sell, with 63 forage-developed bulls averaging $2,752. The top selling bull was Lot 2, a son of Hyline Right Time 338 to B.L. Grady in Faison, N.C. for $5,500. He offered excellent EPD's in all areas and was a powerful bull. Yon Bando R338, who sold as Lot 4, commanded the 2nd top selling price at $5,250 and sold to Terry Kirkland, Batesburg, S.C. Rounding out the top three was Lot 6 at $4,250. He was a stout growth bull by Yon Precision N01 and was the favorite of C & R Farms/Rusty Byrd from Kingston, Tenn. Four bulls sold for $4,000 each, including Lots 1, 12, and 24 and they sold to David Parker, Monroe, N.C.; Joe Davis, Westminster, S.C.; and Five Circle Farm, Belton, S.C., respectively. Bidding was active though out the sale with calving ease bulls that offered powerful growth being the most popular bulls of the day. All the bulls stayed relatively close to home with bulls going to progressive commercial cattlemen in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
Following the Bull Sale, registered Angus females were next in the sale order. The 64 lots of Angus Females averaged $2,702. Top selling female was an open heifer, Lot 75, Yon Burgess S205, a GAR Predestined daughter at $6,400 to Cliffside Farms, Lancaster, Ky. Second high open heifer at $4,800 went to Tomawille Farms, Statham, Ga., and Sunny Valley LLC in Ill., and she was Lot 71, a daughter of GAR Yield Grade from the Yon Sarah family. Stillwater Cattle Co., Seneca, S.C., chose a pair of outstanding Traveler 004 heifers, with Lot 73 selling as the third high open heifer at $4,300 The open heifers were the highest selling group, with buyers paying for the most current performance genetics with superior individual records.
The spring pairs were in high demand as well, with the top pairs being Lots 96 and 93. Lot 96, was the choice of Thomas Shealy from Batesburg, S.C. at $3,000 while JMK Farms selected her Traveler 004 calf at $3,400. The Lot 93 cow, Yon Hazel N157 was selected by Mull Meadow Farms, Pendleton, S.C., at $3,800 while her outstanding heifer calf, Lot 93A, by Traveler 004 was the choice of JMK Farms in Ward, S.C. for $2,500.
The top pair with young calves was Lot 88, a VDAR Lucy Boy daughter with a baby heifer calf sired by GAR Predestined for $3,400 to David Argoe, from Columbia, S.C. In the bred cow group, the top seller, Lot 127, went to Harry Tobin at $3,000. She was a New Design 036 daughter due to BT Right Time 24J. The top bred heifer, a New Design 878 daughter due to GAR Expectation, was Lot 101, selling to Circle K Farms in Union, S.C. at $3,000. Several buyers took home 3-4 lots to add to their Angus programs in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. Finishing up the sale was a strong group of nine registered Charolais female lots which averaged $1,828, with the top two lots going to Larry Edwards in Mt. Ulla, N.C.
Open House specials were held on cattle handling equipment, fencing, seed, cattle feeders, hay rings, and mineral feeders. The auction was solid, and there was a nice crowd, made up of mostly serious buyers. Mike Jones served as auctioneer for the event. Darren Carter worked the telephones and David Gazda, Mike Ryan, Steve McGill, and Luke Mobley served as ringmen. The sale was managed by Yon Family Farms.
