October 8, 2008
Throckmorton, Texas
The R.A. Brown Ranch was the place to be on October 8, 2008 for their 34th Annual “Things Stay the Same” Sale. More than 450 cattlemen enjoyed the fun and fellowship of good people, good cattle and good horses along with an excellent lunch provided by Walco Animal Health. Buyers numbered 152 from 16 states and Mexico proved that the more “things change the more things stay the same” – demand for the really good cattle are a great investment that make cattlemen money.
Red Angus were the highlight of the day with 22 of the first 25 bulls selling for $5,000 or more with more than ever selling to seedstock herds around the country. However the commercial cattlemen continue to be the main focus for the Brown family as there was plenty of volume and excellent selection at all price ranges with 40 head selling from $1,500 to $2,000. The Brown's announced that they will continue increasing the number of Red Angus cattle to keep up with the increasing demand for what continues to be the fastest growing breed in America now four years running.
Red Angus Bulls started off by selling the 2nd highest selling bull in the history of the R.A. Brown Ranch at $47,500: lot 250: Brown-CH Assurance 3567S (Mario x Julian) was purchased by Tom Woodward and Phil English, Broseco Ranch, Mt. Pleasant, Texas, with semen rights leased after the sale to ABS. He could well be what the industry is looking for; great EPDs, eye appeal and an outstanding outcross pedigree.
Many time repeat customer, John Boswell, Indian Canyon Ranch, Lamesa, Texas, bought 14 of the top Red Angus bulls including lot 261 (Destination x Gravity) at $6,500 and lot 255 (Mission Statement x Cherokee Canyon) at $6,000. Lot 262: (Destination x Lancer) at $6,000 sold to Walter Parrish, Bowie, Texas. Lot 256 (Lancer 806 x Bandito Tres) sold to Pelton Red Angus, Burdett, Kansas, for $5,250. Chris Scharbauer, John and Charlotte Kimberlin, King Ranch, Dan and Alicia Stickel as well as James Ray Trant also went home with some of the very top Red Angus bulls.
Red Angus females were the hottest selling item of the day averaging $3,735. The high seller was lot 540: Brown Ms Abigrace P7905 (Vacation x Abigrace) at $30,000 selling to Dr. Mikell Davis, Little Creek Farm, Starkville, Miss., who also bought one of the top bulls – lot 259 at $5,250 (Mission Statement x Vacation x AbiGrace). The next two high sellers were AbiGrace daughters by Mission Statement: Lot 543 at $17,000 to Ken Marquis, Ithica, N.Y. and lot 544 at $16,000 to Tony Tolar at A-1 Land & Cattle in Muenster, Texas.
This marked the 8th year in a row that the Brown's sold every 1A Red Angus three-year old female and the customers love it because they are getting some of the top cows in the business just as they enter the prime of their life. The Brown's mass multiply their very best females in the herd via embryo transfer just to keep up with the demand. As a result their pedigrees are stacked generation after generation with some of the very best in the business.
Volume Female Buyers included: Fernando Elizondo, Hacienda Guadalupe; Bill Everett, 96 Ranch; Judy Kay Ferguson, 3K Land & Cattle; Phil and Trish Thomas, Hills of Ivan Ranch; and Rick Killion.
The Brown family normally sell 150 Angus females in their sale each year, but instead will sell them by private treaty later this fall because the American Angus Association National Tour fell right on top of the Brown's sale date.
Angus Bulls sold very well from start to finish. Lot 1: RAB Hotshot 56T (Objective x 1407) at $7,000 sold to Houston McKenzie's Land & Livestock, McCamey, Texas. Lot 2: RAB-RIG Goodnight 3130T (Objective x 1407) at $5,250 sold to Vic Horn, Maravillas Ranch, Alpine, Texas. Lot 42: (Redirect x KC Prime Time) at $ 5,000 sold to John R. Williams Ranch, Jacksboro, Texas. Again, there was excellent selection in everyone's price range with 33 bulls selling from $1,950 to $2,750.
SimAngus Bulls sold well with the black SimAngus being the highest averaging bulls of the entire sale. Stan Thompson's 6T Ranch & Cattle Company was a volume buyer taking home a great selection including the three highest sellers: Lot 479 at $6,000, lot 460: (Revolution x Legend) and Lot 461, a Blue Moon son both at $5,000. Red SimAngus bulls were the bargain of the day averaging only $2,390.
Ten percent volume discounts were taken advantage of by several cattlemen including: Jim Smith, Balderas Ranch; Joe Leathers, 6666 Ranch; Ron Lane, Pitchfork Ranch, Weldon Hawley, W.T. Waggoner Estate, Stan Thompson, 6T Ranch & Cattle Company, Billy Brandenburger, 4K Brady Creek Ranch, John R. Williams; and Donald Paddock.
