Calhoun, Ga.

A strong Fleckvieh offering combined with an enthusiastic crowd of cattlemen and women resulted in good buyer acceptance at the Third Spring In The East Fleckvieh and Fullblood Simmental Sale at Calhoun, Georgia May 3, 2008. Concerns of an election year and spiraling feed, fuel and fertilizer costs paled by comparison to the buyers confidence in Fleckvieh's ability to play an increasingly important role in future beef production. The Lot 25, SS Tammie, a Full South African Fleckvieh donor prospect consigned by Snell Simmental of Snellville, Ga., made a lot of friends as she went on a final bid of $4,500 going to Phillips Farms, Adairsville Ga. Another popular female, B5 Shalonda, Lot 7, a Hafkenberg daughter bred to Hannable, was consigned by Blair Farms of Maryville Tenn. When Col. Dan Skeels dropped the gavel for the final bid, she went to Indian Creek Cattle Co., Huntsville Ala., for $4,400. SS Sonja, Lot 22, a Bolagi daughter bred to the polled Exodus bull and also consigned by Snell Simmental, found a new home at Moore Farms, Huntsville Ala., following their bid of $4,000. Greer's Polled Power Fleckvieh of Greenbriar, Tenn. selected to impressive Blair Farms consignment, B5 Starling for a herd addition at $3,000.

Open heifers were also well received with Phillips Farm's T2 Roman daughter, Torrey T043, going to TNT Simmentals of Cleveland Ga., for $2,500. Blair Farms sold a Bar 5 SA Stimulation daughter to Indian Valley Ranch, Dover, Ark., for $2,400 and Indian Creek Cattle Co., Huntsville, Ala., ICC Regal, an own daughter of the immortal DDD Broadway went to Phillips Farms, also for $2,400. The value of superior Fleckvieh genetics was again realized when four embryo lots representing some of the elite sires and dams in the breed, sold for $14,340 to average $3,585. One special semen lot consisting of Fleckvieh sires in high demand grossed $7,120.

Volume buyers for the day included Buzzard Hollow Ranch, Granbury, Texas, $7,400; G&M Farms, Calhoun, Ga., $7,330; Phillips Farms, Adairsville Ga., $6,900; and TNT Simmentals, Cleveland Ga., $6,540. Roy Schwake of Schwake Cattle Service, who managed the sale, commented that “The quality of the Spring In The East offering continues to increase with each sale and the demand has grown as well.” The sale is sponsored by the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation, Fred Schuetze President.
