OVER 600 SIMBRAH ENTHUSIASTS ATTEND MAS III WEEKEND

Over 600 spirited Simbrah enthusiasts were in attendance at the MAS Simbrah SHOWDOWN and Sale III held March 28th & 29th at La Muneca Ranch near Linn, Texas. ASA Simbrah Advisory committee chairman Tim Smith states “Simbrah excitement was definitely evident at the MAS weekend events. Everyone in attendance left with positive momentum about Simbrah from the youngest exhibitors to the eldest of buyers. The MAS weekend generates such an opportunity for all Simbrah enthusiasts to share ideas and gain new genetics for their individual programs. The hard work and effort of all of the MAS participants was obvious with the outstanding set of cattle offered and rewarded by the aggressive bidding of the buyers. The contagious enthusiasm generated by the folks attending MAS is a major attribute to the Simbrah breed. Fellow Simbrah breeders say “THANKS” to all of the MAS families for their dedication and commitment to Simbrah !”

A highlight of the weekend was the $15,000 awarded in premium money to the MAS Junior Simbrah Exhibitors who exhibited their Simbrah heifers in the MAS $15,000 SHOWDOWN. $7,500 was awarded in Showmanship premiums to five different age divisions paying ten deep in each class. The top two in each division won belt buckles plus cash. Winners were (8 & 9 yrs. old) Braedon Raub and Hunter Wells (10 – 11 yrs.) Maycie Wells and Adrianna de los Santos (12 – 13 yrs.) Alex de los Santos Jr. and Hunter Sorrells (14 – 15 yrs.) Mikey de los Santos and Liana Flores and (16 – 18 yrs.) Lindsay and Lesli Garrett. The MAS Showmanship judges were Wes Tiemann and Steven Kahla.

Mikey de los Santos from Linn won the SHOWDOWN Calf and Grand Champion Purebred Simbrah with LMC BB Muneca and received a $3,000 premium check. Lindsay Garrett from Canton received $1,500 for her Senior and Reserve Grand Champion, LMC Tatiana. Other division winners included Reserve Calf Champion – Jackson Hanna, Junior Champions, Hunter Wells and Patrick Woods and Reserve Senior Champion Liana Flores. Hunter Sorrells won the SHOWDOWN percentage show with his F-1 Simbrah named LMC Ivy Rose and received $600 in premiums. Marco Flores won $400 with his Reserve Champion Meyer 734 daughter. All of the champions were bred and sponsored by La Muneca and Louie Flores. Mitch Thomas judged the MAS SHOWDOWN cattle show.

La Muneca Cattle Co also had their annual LMC Jackpot and awarded $7,500 in premiums to their junior clients. Frost Bank – Richard Foster donated $1,250 of these premiums. The champion heifer was LMC Red Moves daughter exhibited by Jackson Hanna followed by Reserve – Marla Cantu, 3rd – Mikey de los Santos 4th – Hunter Wells, 5th – Lindsay Garrett, 6th – Charmaine Thomae, 7th – Roy Duleba, 8th – Victor Guerra, 9th Abigail Hanna and 10th Samuel Ramon

The Champion Junior Showmanship winners were Adrianna de los Santos, 2nd – Victoria Zulim, 3rd – Liana Flores, 4th – Regan Duleba, 5th Abigail Hanna, 6th – Hunter Wells and 7th – Victor Guerra. The Champion Senior Showmanship winners were Alyssa Martinez , 2nd –Marco Flores, 3rd – Mikey de los Santos, 4th – Charmaine Thomae, 5th – Aaron Gonzaalez, 6th – Jacob Agado and 7th – Abraham Lopez. Showmanship was judged by Tim Smith. The cattle were judged by Hernando Guerra, a long time and prominent breeder from Mexico.

Long time beef cattle enthusiast Martha Garrett stated “The MAS event is one of a kind for youth as well as Simbrah breeders. For our youth it provides the opportunity to learn about marketing, genetics, visit with the breed's leading producers and to make friends from across the Simbrah world. In addition, the show provides youth a way to be financially rewarded for selecting Simbrah. It is an exciting two days for the breed and shows the strength of the breed as well as the commitment of the breeders.”

Another highlight of the sale were the donation lots for the Rafael A. & Carmen Guerra Memorial Scholarship Fund, American Jr. Simbrah Round Up Scholarship Endowment Fund and ASA Simbrah Advisory committee. Donors were Vela Cattle Co., Gilbert & Emma Garza, Franco Trevino, Joe and Nelda Rodriguez, Richard Foster, Louie Flores, Smith Genetics and La Muneca Cattle Co. Buyers were Broken Oak Ranch, Dr. Ernesto Guerra, Felo & Stef Martinez, Dr. Boyd Bien, Felo Guerra, Kito Saenz, Bud & Lupita Wentz, Hernando Guerra, Donald Kelley, Mike Guerra, Ted Kohleppell, Tom Zulim, Richard Foster and La Muneca. $29,500 was raised for the Rafael A Guerra Memorial Scholarship Fund, $2,200 for the American Jr. Simbrah Round Up Scholarship Fund and $2,300 for the ASA Simbrah Advisory Committee for a total of $34,000.

One of the original goals of MAS was to expand our bull markets which we successfully have done selling 154 yearling bulls for a $2,237 average in three sales. The top selling bull, LMC VG Go Getter was consigned by La Muneca and Victor Guerra. He is the 2008 Reserve National & International Champion bull and sold for $11,000 to George Guerra and Jose Luis Garza from Rio Grande City. The 2nd and 3rd top selling bulls were consigned by La Muneca, Reavis and Smith Genetics selling for $7,500 to Alvaro Gonzalez from McAllen and $4,250 to Andy Prukop from McCook. The 4th and 5th top sellers were consigned by La Muneca and are full ET sibs by Red Bullet selling for $4,200 and $3,800 to Robert Seaman from Houston and Darrell Sklar from Edna. Forty-six bulls grossed $113,700 to average $2,472.

The top selling pair was consigned by Leandra Flores, a junior exhibitor and was a LM Full House daughter with a LMC Red Buck daughter selling for $5,500 to Richard Foster from Wallis. The second top selling pair sold for $4,500 and was consigned by La Negra and La Muneca with the cow selling for $2,500 to Javier Moreno from Edinburg and the heifer calf for $2,000 to Shelby McCoy from McAllen. The third top selling pair was consigned by Emilio Flores, a junior exhibitor and sold ½ interest for $4,200 to Bet M Ranch from Castroville. Seven pairs grossed $27,800 for a $3,971 average per pair.

The top selling embryo lot was consigned by Reavis Farms & Smith Genetics selling four embryos out of LMC EF Johnnie Walker Black and Golden Glory for $1,000 per embryo to Kathy Hutto from Dale. Reavis Farms consigned the 2nd top selling embryo lot selling four embryos by Sargeant for $900 per embryo to Terry Whitaker from Ranger. Five embryo lots sold for $13,500 for an average of $2,700 per lot or $587 average per embryo on 23 embryos.

The bidding was spirited on of the proven donor cows headed up by LMC Oprah, the dam to last year's top selling heifer, LMC Diva. She was consigned by Alyssa Martinez, a junior exhibitor and La Muneca selling for $9,000 to repeat volume buyers Bud & Lupita Wentz from Olmito. The second top selling donor was the MAS II champion, LMC Miss Texas consigned by Liana Flores & La Muneca selling for $5,000 to the Wentz's. Bud and Lupita also bought the only Brahman lot consigned by La Negra for $4,000.

The top selling flush was out of LM Victor's Patty, the dam to the top selling bull and was consigned by Victor Guerra, a junior exhibitor and La Muneca selling for $2,500 to Smith and Reavis from Giddings and Mission. Two flushes grossed $4,500 to average $2,250 per flush.

The demand on show heifer prospects was strong with Bud Wentz and La Muneca consigning the top and 3rd top sellers, for $7,000 and $4,500 for 1/2 interest selling to Jordan Grahmann from Halletsville and Jacob Atzenhoffer from Orange Grove. They were the 1st and 2nd pick of a litter out of LMC Diva and Smith Nu Wave II. The 2nd and 4th top sellers were R-S Powerball daughters consigned by RGV Cattle selling for $5,750 and $4,000 to Rebecca Gonzalez from San Isidro and Maycie Wells from San Benito. Three other heifers tied for the 4th spot selling for $4,000 to Zane Schooler from Bertram, Victoria Zulim from and Elisa Haggard from Hockley. They were consigned by 6G Ranch, Louie Flores and La Muneca. Ten show prospects grossed $44,150 to average $4,415 per lot.

The sale seemed to get stronger as the night went on with lots of consumer demand for the bred heifers topped by ½ interest in LMC Tatiana by Red Bullet selling for $9,500 to Bruce and Melissa Van Meter from Georgia. She was consigned by the future Aggie Lindsay Garrett who won many major shows with her. The second top selling bred heifer was a T-Cat daughter consigned by Marco Flores, a junior exhibitor and La Muneca selling for $5,000 to Bud & Lupita Wentz. The 3rd top bred heifer was consigned by John Russell and La Muneca and bought by Skip Butler from Chapman Ranch. The fourth top seller was a Precision Red daughter with EPD's in the top 1% of the breed selling for $3,200 to Doug Lightfoot. 31 bred heifers grossed $78,550 to average $2,534.

The percentage (3/4 Simmy x 1.4 Brahman) offering was topped by two daughters of LMC Mariah consigned by La Muneca. The top seller by WLE Overload sold ½ interest for $6,400 to 6G ranch from Rock Island. The 2nd top seller by Dream On sold ½ interest for $6,200 to La Negra Cattle Co. from Edinburg. The 3rd top seller was Meyer 734 daughter consigned by Louie Flores and La Muneca and sold ½ interest for $5,000 to Braedon Raub from Lampasas.

Volume buyers were, Alvaro Gonzalez Family, Bud & Lupita Wentz, Jose Luis Garza, Rickey Burch, 6G Ranch, Bet'M Ranch – Dr. Ernesto C. Guerra, Hernando Guerra, San Vicente Ranch, Skip & Janice Butler and Robert Seaman.

The total MAS Simbrah sale grossed $437,510 on 169 lots for a $2,589 average per lot. Leo Casas was the auctioneer. MAS is made up of nine South Texas Simbrah breeders – 6G Ranch-Fred Grahmann Family, La Muneca Cattle Co. – Carlos X. Guerra Family, La Negra Cattle Co. – Javier Moreno, LPJ Ranch – the Luis Flores family, Monte Christo Ranch – the Jud Flowers family, Reavis Farms Inc. – the Randy Reavis family, RGV Cattle Co. – the Rene Vela family, Thunder Cattle Co. – Scott Frazier family and Vela Cattle Co. – Pablo and Aaron Vela families.
