The Adams Ranch 31st Annual Production Sale and Field Day were held on November 11th and 12th, in Fort Pierce. After pasture tours and lunch, Dr. Tim Olson the Geneticist from the University of Florida, began the afternoon program on selected crossbreeding. After touching on the benefits of hybrid vigor, he discussed the use of the American breeds, like the Braford and Brangus, and how they can be used in some Florida herds that need a little more Brahman brought back into the herd.

Jim Johnson, with Pfizer Animal Health, followed Dr. Olson to discuss GeneStar genetic testing for marbling, tenderness, and feed efficiency. GeneStar, since last year, has expanded DNA testing to cover 56 gene markers to improve its accuracy. This is new technology to help the cattle industry identify superior cattle with traits that have great economic value. Marbling and tenderness are large factors in consumer acceptance. Feed efficiency is critical for us as producers.

At High Noon, on a cool Thursday, and a crowd of 400, the Adams Ranch sale was kicked off with the sale of desserts for the benefit of the St. Lucie County Cattlewomen. They were followed by the sale of four ranch horses, which sold for a $3,000 average.

The Adams Ranch bulls and heifers were sold to 46 buyers from four states. Seventy-four bulls sold for a $2,000 average, up $200 from last year. The high selling Braford bull brought $3,500.

The sale was wrapped up by selling 138 heifers with the bred heifers averaging $760. The Adams Family certainly appreciates all the support to make this an outstanding event.
