    What name?

I needed a calf to use milk from our only milk cow, so I purchased a 3 day old calf that was sired by a Hereford and momma looked kinda like a holstein, but had speckles on her, and a black nose. She was mainly white. The owner called her a "----line" cow. What breed or type of cow was he...

Monday afternoon I figured out it hadn't nursed- the whole cow was covered in suck marks about the heighth of the baby's neck. The calf was down and...

    Should cows eat the afterbirth?

I was told a cow needed to eat the afterbirth for the vitamins and minerals. With horses, we always removed the after birth as soon as we found it. They didn't want to eat it anyway. What do you guys say??

    Goats and ringworm?

Yesterday we picked up a bull calf from a local dairy farm. The owner has a goat he keeps in a separate pen at one end of his cow barn. When asked about it, he said that having a goat keeps the cows from getting ringworm. He knew nothing about the "why" of this, but said an old timer told him...

    Fence for calves

Okay, now that my other fence question has been answered, I'm wanting to know what types of fence are good to contain calves. This would be a smaller "starter" or "training" area inside of my other fence. Do I need to worry about calves getting out of my main fence which is 3 strand high...

    Fence posts

Most of my fence is post and high tensile. I'm setting up a new pasture in a field and I don't want to go to the big expense of wooden pressure treated posts and high tensile. I was considering doing those 4' green "T" posts for my corners and using either those plastic step in posts with the...

    How to contain a cow

I need some ideas for a way to make something to contain a cow for treatment, exams, etc. So far I've only had to treat the calves and I can use a rope halter and snub them to the fence. Any ideas would be appreciated. I would be setting this up in the barn in a large open area where the...
