    Rumen function between grass species

One of our farms soil varies significantly from sand rises to silt loam flats. We've been planting veldt grass on the rises and phalaris on the flats. Just wondering how much this affects animal performance when they go from one to the other within a week or few days etc.?

    Resting bulls

Have had 3x young bulls in with 70heifers for 45days and am looking at buying another 90 heifers to mate and trade. Thinking about resting bulls for 6weeks and then putting them in. This is a bit out of season for us but think they will sell well. Nice heifers. Is 6weeks long enough? They...

    Rotational grazing & cattle behaviour

They've just finished calving and am keen to get them done before grain harvest (or else leave them till January). Only trouble is its just me and my brother and im not sure we can...

    Calves eating too much hay

3-4month old calves seem to be eating a lot of hay. They're still drinking from mum adequately I think, but starting to look a bit full in the gut of hay. Can this be an issue. Undeveloped rumen? Or nothing to worry about.
