I've got an almost 5 acre watermelon patch right next to one of my pastures. Last fall, I planted it in annual ryegrass. The cattle next to it are all first calf heifers, most calved by March 24, except for a couple that just calved last week. Still eating some hay (5x6 bale lasts about a week...
I have a loader tractor that the loader bracket bolts into the cast iron axle support and transmission housing. I can not keep these bolts tight! I have tried loctite. There is no way I can tack weld the bolts (due to clearance). Anybody got any good ideas how to keep them tight?
Say I’ve got 3 different herds of cattle. I’m going to put the bull in with the first herd (15 cows) about May 20th. Leave him for 2 months. I have another herd (15 cows) I’d like to breed August -October, and another herd of 18 to breed November-January. Will this be too much on him? He’s 2.5...
I’ve got a group of 200-300lb calves (still on mommas) that have fallen in love with the minerals I have out (vigortone 3v5s). They come in with their mommas at feeding time everyday, and while moms are eating, the calves eat minerals. 10 calves will consume almost a gallon daily. The mommas...
I have a pj dump trailer. Over the past 6 weeks, it has started raising and lowering itself, just parked in the field. I’ve had to start unhooking the battery cables to keep it from draining the battery. Anybody got any ideas?
Quick question. Northeast Tennessee location. I have a group of cows that are fall calving. I usually breed them December 1 through late January/early February. Thinking about breeding November 1- January 10. This will put calves coming in August heat. Would you go ahead and breed or hold a...
My wife has a bottle calf. It’s 3 months old. She got it from a friend with excellent herd health. It has always had a chronic dry cough. I’ve given it resflor gold, la-300, and draxxin over the course of the 3 months. Nothing has helped. She has others that came from the same source. They do...
I know it’s not an ideal time, but I calved out some heifers in July/ early August. Now, I’m having several of the calves develop pneumonia ( I did take one of the first ones to the vet to confirm it was pneumonia). Is it just mainly due to the weather? (Hot, some rain)
My pastures are full of dallisgrass this year. I know I need to clip the heads to prevent them from getting staggers, but how often? I mowed 2 pastures about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the dallisgrass is headed back out again. You really can’t even tell I bushhogged. I hate to mow it real short...
I’ve got a pasture that I rotate cattle through. I mowed it for hay early and it has been growing back for 5-6 weeks. It’s always had some red clover in it (15-25%), but now it’s closer to 75%-80%. It’s blooming heavily and is almost knee high. I’m afraid it’ll cause them to bloat. Am I wrong?
Anybody ever built their own sweep? I’ve got a barn I’d like to make a cattle working barn. The center lane of the barn is 8’ wide. I need to be able to turn the cattle 90°, then down an alley into the head gate. I can either try to build a sweep or a curved alley. I’d prefer to build as much of...
Has anybody been able to find any pneu-dart darts lately? I can find a few 2cc or 3cc, but nothing larger. Tried to order from manufacturer, they said it could be over 6 months before they have any more. They claim it’s due to supply chain disruptions. I’m wondering what the real reason is.
I know it’s a very sensitive topic. I’ve got some clay based pastures that have been pastured for at least 60 years. I’d like to bust up any hard pan this fall. I’ve looked at a hay king renovator. I’m wondering, I already have a 5 shank v-ripper (basically a 5 shank subsoiler). Could I just...
Just curious. I see people storing round bales (either in a shed, barn, or under tarp) by stacking either some or all on their ends. Is there an advantage to stacking, even just the bottom layer, on the ends or is it just personal preference?
I’m in northeast TN. I’ve noticed that it just seems like the grass in pastures and hayfields just hasn’t started growing around here. Even what was fertilized. It’s got a real nice “black green” color, just not growing. My ryegrass is looking great but the perennial grasses are just sitting...
I had bad luck today. I had a cow die today. Haven’t got a clue why. Here’s the kicker. She had a calf on 10-8-22. So 4 months to the day. My wife is already raising a bottle calf. Would you put the calf of the dead cow with the bottle calf and feed each one milk + calf starter, put them...
Just wondering how everyone heats their homes? Wood, electric, propane, etc.
I primarily use wood, but also will use electric to warm up a room or two. Have propane for when it gets really cold, the power’s out, and the woodpile is running low.
I’ve got a single strand electric fence. Mostly 14 gauge steel wire, except for about 750’ of poly rope along the road ( it’s also at the end of the fence, so the current goes through the poly last). Total length is about a mile. 15 mile fencer -ac power. All new insulators. With a 5 light...
I’ve got a group of cows that will finish calving in about a week. After they get done, they’ll be brought in and vaccinated/wormed/etc.
My bull won’t be put back in until early January. My question is, if I go ahead and give all the girls a shot of lutalyse (with the hopes of tightening up the...
