    Craigslist cattle

That is another reason why we use killed virus vacc on anything that comes here now... it stimulates the immune system much "less intensely" it seems... but that is just us and it seems to work that way better in our situation. We also have found that we don't do anything else to them for a...

If she has been for sale for awhile, I would be leery.....

    Craigslist cattle

All depends on your level of experience and patience.... and the first thing I would do is some vaccinations and worming, and keep her separate from the other cattle for awhile. At least a longhorn x calf should slide out with no problems. If she is open or a b#@%h, she will bring about that...

    Cull hard

Dairy beef crosses have a few positives that are already well known.... They do not go through as much of a "frame growth" as straight dairy (holsteins) and then take alot of feed to fill out to a "finished animal."... The beef in them will put a little more meat on them as they are growing...

    This is Crazy over $10/pound!

Holstein bull calves here are bringing $5/lb and more, for the ones that are 85 lbs and bigger... about 2 months ago, I sold a 120 lb holstein bull calf I got off a dairy, their hutches were full, and they are 2 hours from the stockyard and won't go that far for 1 or 2 calves, which I...

    Sold Four Yesterday

We kept most of the heifers and sold every steer this spring... including those 2 nut cases recently. When we bring the group of 30 or so off pasture where we have normally run steers for the season, we will pick and choose who to keep since we have been culling more cows than normal... and NOT...

    Sold Four Yesterday

Good for you.... the prices are scary... does make you think twice about keeping much... Sold 2 nut cases last week, were too small to go in the group a month ago... partly because they would run out the barn every time you went in to feed and wouldn't come back in until you were far away...

    Finally sold Molly's calf

We have sold over 40 steers the past 2 months, some we wintered over and weighed in the 7 wts... some recently that were 500+ that were weaned and vaccinated and all... just these 2 were plain stupid... Most get used to coming in the barn to eat at the bunk and don't do more than move out of...

    Finally sold Molly's calf

Glad you got him gone... Yes you could have done better if he was a steer... but what you got is what steers were bringing not too long ago... so you did good... especially at that weight... He looked to be in good condition. This is the time to sell ANYTHING that anyone is contemplating...

    Calhoun sale 5-07

My son and I were milk testing in Weyers Cave last night but I wanted to go. There are alot of black/dairy cross cows that go through Harrisonburg. There was a cow sale in Staunton Tues night but I didn't go. We are down about 30 cows from where we ought to be...mostly from culling. With the...

    Pay day

Shipped the 1600 lb young bull that had a scrotal hernia.... loop of intestine down into the scrotum along side one testicle... not common but the vet said he had seen one... could be fixed with surgery but not worth the cost with what bulls are bringing... He brought 1.35/lb... check was over...

    Calhoun sale 5-07

Seeing the same thing in Harrisonburg @kenny thomas ..... goats and sheep out the ying yang every week.... and some are pretty rough looking too.... don't know where they keep coming from. I'll bet there were in the 3-400 range also... I did not stay to see, I stopped to pick up a check from...

    Feeder futures

The holstein dairies in this area have been doing that for several years. Breeding the top 1/3 or so of the herd to sexed holstein heifer semen, using straight holstein semen and beef bulls on the lower 1/2 or so of the herd so they get a calf... and as you said, using some for recips...

    Feeder futures

Not sure of what the purpose would be. Holstein standards means they have to have a white switch on tail and a certain amount of other white... the blacks are beef crosses and grade accordingly... solid black holstein crosses... usually with brown swiss giving them a dark choc or grayish black...
