    Incorporating Stockers- Any advice Welcome!

Best way to learn is to start. Probably best to find an order buyer. Keep them long enough or feed them enough to get at least 200 lbs on them.

    The Casino

Looking good. Do you buy ones with short ears some? Do they ever get split off if so? I thought I saw one.

    To much protein?

Is that an even 3 way mix? If so, that's a lot of protein.

DDG in an Upright Bin ?

I don't have an auger on my bin, but it is an upright steel bin. If I have much DDG in the feed (maybe over 25%), it cakes up bad. Even last winter it caked up. I just got a mix with no DDG and it is flowing well.

    Stocker start up

Last winter was the first winter I had some. I bought 430 lb heifers and sold them 90 days later. I had them on stockpiled fescue and fair quality hay and 3 lbs of grain. They did not gain well only averaging 495 lbs when I sold. I think part of that was being on the wrong end of shrink both...

Tractor supply got some jacked up prices

I had a coworker move to the country with a few acres. She mentioned they spend so much money at TSC. They could do well the next decade with everyone wanting to move to the country.

    Feeding lightweight calves

Protein tubs are not economical. If you are worried about coughing, you could just do half corn half corn gluten pellets. That should be around 15% protein. I think you want more than 12% protein, especially for lighter ones.

    Preconditioning calves

If you have lots of grass, you probably don't need to grain them much, 2-5 lbs per day. Like bird dog said, your grass alone will probably get them 1.2 adg or so if they are on grass for a while. Grain is high but I think it will still pay for the current value on my calves. Money wise, it helps...

    WDGS

I think you wouldn't want more than half their diet from distillers, so no more than 4-6 lbs dry matter basis. The thing to watch for is sulfur content. You don't want their total diet to have more than 0.40% sulfur. Distillers can be 0.70% sulfur so if half of their diet is that and the grass...

    WDGS

I would find a way to feed it for as cheap as you can get it, even if it's just by the bucket.

Will you feed it from a silage wagon?

    Chute side setup

My wife missed the crazy horned one the other day. It was stuck in the chute just past the shoulders while I'm 5 ft in from of the chute trying to open the gate to get it in a pen. I was a bit rushed to get that gate open before that thing forced its way out the chute!

    Chute side setup

Thanks. Pictures are always nice. Curious if the 2x12 is next to the chute or alley and if it gets in the way. I thought railroad companies charged. How does one get ahold of a railroad company to inquire? Free is always nice. I used free used telephone poles from local electric coop. I don't...

    Chute side setup

We have a gate in front of the chute that can be opened to let them in a pen if they need separated. Sometimes that pen has calves that haven't been worked yet though. More pens would be nice.

    Stocker start up

October is known as dead calf month with the temperature swings.

    Chute side setup

Is wind an issue with the plastic tables? Can you weigh them down enough? It was terribly windy for us yesterday. We just backed the truck out of the wind, put everything in boxes, and put rocks in the boxes. It worked well.

    Chute side setup

What is everyone's chute side setup? Need to figure out what is most efficient. This was ours today (after cleaning up a bit).

Just bought some bulls that weight myself. Did you buy them yourself?

    What size slab for bins

All the rebar does is prevent it from cracking. It won't make it any stronger. I would do #4 bars 12" OC both ways.

    Feedlot fencing

Definitely higher margin on pasture if a fair amount is available. More opportunity for a large number of smaller margins in a backgrounding pen though, so the backgrounding pen may be more total profit. Could do both! It is a benefit to always be in the market. You can background in the winter...
